Because she did not want to have even more criticism from her conservative party. The right wing of her party is criticising her SO often for not being conservative enough, and that was the perfect way to get same sex marriage and avoid critics from her own party

She’s not a perfect person but the vibe I get from her is that she’s genuine. Meaning she always tells the truth, good or bad. I don’t believe it
