First NRO reviews: Katy is back

Here are some excerpts

Jezebel

"Katy Perry's career is never really over - Surprisingly, I’m getting serious Haim vibes from the song’s melody, with its words-all-running-together chorus, and the production would find itself at home on Carly Rae Jepsen’s Dedicated. It’s new for Katy, for sure, but will it be a hit?"

Paper

"Katy Perry is back and better than ever on 'Never Really Over' - The euphoric breakup anthem recalls an older, blessed moment of Katy. The rousing, explosively catchy chorus is right out of the pop textbook she and Bonnie McKee wrote with "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls." But it somehow doesn't sound dated, freshened up with a strong dose of HAIM, audible in the choppy, funky synths and self-harmonization, as well as the glittery shimmer of Carly Rae Jepsen."

Idolator

"Katy Perry's 'Never Really Over' is a song of the summer contender - The song really takes flight on the quirky post-chorus, which cleverly samples Dagny’s “Love You Like That.” All in all, it’s an extremely satisfying introduction to KP5. And one that feels like a natural progression from Witness rather than a step back. While some have described “Never Really Over” as a throwback to the Teenage Dream era, the lyrics reflect a maturity that only comes with life experience."

Forbes

"Katy Perry returns with summertime electro smash 'Never Really Over' - The pop superstar just released her new single “Never Really Over,” which is the electro-pop jam that’s been missing from 2019. The lovesick singer presents a tongue-twisting chorus that sticks in your head and demands you sing along…or at least attempt to. Sure, the words may blend together and become indistinguishable from one another at times, but the hook works perfectly with the rapid-fire beat to create what could be the true hit Perry could use right now.

Is “Never Really Over” on the same level as some of her greatest electronic smashes, like “Hot N Cold,” “Teenage Dream” or “Firework?” No. But the song stands out in today’s musical landscape while not pushing anyone too far into uncharted territory."

I think this one sums it up the best.

It's not on the same level as her iconic bops, but considering the style of music we currently have to suffer with in the charts, it could do very well and is almost a breath of fresh air.

I hope this is the beginning of the early 10s pop reclaiming the charts. We really need it :diane:

I’m the only one that’s not feeling it because I keep singing I Love You Like That’s chorus instead.....

I agree with you but I think it's great that she's evolving. I don't need the exact same Teenage Dream-type of music. Even though I love it I feel like Prism was Teenage Dream 2.0 and I was happy that she switched her sound for Witness and hopefully now for KP5 again, even if it's just a little bit :kara:

I think if she really went back and did only a TD 2.0, she would fail hard. So I think this new style could suit her really well, also Zedd and Katy seem to match pretty well.

I am here for it :diane:
If we get a lead single (if this isn't one idk?), I hope we get Katy + Zedd + Max Martin :diane:

Katys style, Zedds production and Max's lyrics would slay so much :diane:

She said in an interview that there isn't a release strategy this time and that she just wants to share her music and connect with people

Europe having taste, what else is new :vegas:
Remember we pushed Just Dance way before the US ever did :vegas:

Also Zedd is always a good choice for having a solid German hit.

I'm personally not hooked but maybe it will grow on me. On the contrary I loved 365 from the first listens.
