Hey, weird thread I know. But I'm sure a lot of you know how big of a Madonna fan I am, but besides her and Cher I am not too familiar with pop music from the 80s. I'm currently trying to expand my tastes with Janet and Mylène Farmer. But what would you recommend? As an artist with a very good discography that started maybe in the 80s or prior? I'm into big show, very visual artists.

While she's primarily 80s and some 90s and probably doesn't meet a lot of your criteria in your OP :bradley:  , I've personally been really digging Laura Branigan as of late.  Her live vocals are fire!  Too bad she left us so soon!

I'll try to pick things people might not normally suggest on GGD. Good luck on your music exploration

I'm a  huge 80s Pop and Dance fan, so let me start off by saying that NOBODY put on a "big show" like Madonna, Janet, or Paula back then, so the artists I recommend will not really be known for groundbreaking concerts or visuals (except for maybe Cyndi Lauper, but she was more pop-rock)    That being said, there were tons of prominent female pop singers back then who had a long string of super catchy hits and amazing voices.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alisha, the more electro-pop Madonna sound-alike with some iconic nightclub singles back in '84/85.  This is arguably her best.

Bananarama had a string of awesome SAW-produced hits from 84-89

Jody Watley, amazing funk-pop singer with really fun, infectious music videos

Swing Out Sister:

Taylor Dayne:

Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine

EDIT: Can't believe I almost forgot Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam!

Mitsou, the French-Canadian Madonna
