According to a spokesperson for the Cathedral, some of the artwork had already been removed prior to the renovations, while most of the sacred relics were held in its sacristry, which was unlikely to be damaged by the fire. If all of this is true we can really be relieved with this outcome... With a fire like this you would think everything is lost.

This is so so so twisted in so many ways, it's because of the renovation this supposedly happened but thanks to the renovation they kept the majority of the art safe. At least now they can rebuild it with better material so they can prevent stuff like this... But that's really too far in the future to talk about. Still a lot is lost in this fire and it will take years to even open again. But still I'm relieved I can wake up tomorrow and the Notre Dame is still standing. How can we in the ****ing 21st century still not stop a fire in time? For older buildings it’s a lot harder to do considering materials used 100 years ago are likely to be more flammable. The entire roof structure was made of wood so it’s no surprise that’s the only thing caught alight (and quickly). I’m sure 100’s of years ago they didn’t really take into account that someone would be up on the roof using electrical/blowtorch equipment for restoration. Installing fire prevention measures on older buildings is more difficult to do, from what I’ve read. Also, the good thing that can come from this is that when they do rebuild, the roof should be able to hold up better if there was another fire. The main problem really was that the church was not accessible for the firefighters and that the masses of spectators watching the church burn down blocked the direct way to it. A news report that just aired here said it took them over two hours to get through the masses at site.
