Why so limited to pop?

I keep hearing “this is the year of pop” and we need more “pop girls” as if pop was the only thing in existence. I personally could not care less what genre is popular at the moment because I only care about the quality of the songs and not their style. I am the same way with Gaga. I care about her as an artist and don’t really care what direction she goes in. You would think that fans of Gaga would be more open to other genres by now but for many that is just not the case. So why so limited to pop music?

When people talk about ''pop girls'', ''pop music'' etc I don't think they are trying to emphasize the genre. ''Pop girl'' for instance is a term that can fit every female to a certain extend, from Gaga to Azealia Banks to Billie Eilish.

But I do agree that pop music fans tend to be very close-minded regarding to anything outside their comfort zone. They despise every song that isn't a banger from the first listen and I think it's unfair, since songs can grow so much on you. But pop is a safe and formulaic genre by nature so it make sense that the biggest pop consumers looks for these traits in music. We can't do much about it.

You know that "pop" in "pop music" means "popular", right? :reductive: And that can include any genre :trollga: . But

Its purely for familiarity and safety for Gaga fans I feel. With Gaga not releasing as much straight pop music in the past 6 years or so, Gaga fans are looking for something else to carry them over until she possibly releases a straight up pop record again. I.e. Ava Max has been latched onto quite a fair bit as she has a few alleged Gaga-esque qualities and to many fans is like a newer version of her. This relates heavily to the familiarity that so many fans look for. I feel that many Gaga fans in particular cry out for more pop-girls because they are filling the large mainstream pop gap Gaga has left.

I see too many fans crying out for LG6 to be a dance-pop record. I disagree. For almost 6 years of her career, Gaga's main genre was pop/dance with a few twists and turns to each record's overall sound. Had she continued this, she would be a one-trick pony with no real diversity which isnt what Gaga is about. Gaga is reinvention.

But with her releases since 2013, each album is different to the last both visually and sonically. She has done Jazz, Country-Folk-Pop and now a Piano Ballad/Country/Shallow-Pop soundtrack. But because these albums arent spewing constant dance-pop and because Gaga clearly isnt caring for chart success to release a current sound each time per say, fans arent happy and cry for nostalgia and familiarity as if that is all Gaga should be offering. For example, Ava was read to filth and beyond for "So am I" sounding like "Sweet but Psycho" mark 2, but those same fans cry for Gaga to stick to dance music. To me its quite selfish as Gaga is demonstrating diversity, versatility and ability to lend her vocals to almost all genres at this point to a degree (still waiting for her hard rock era) but too many fans just cant open their minds enough to realize how creative it is and allow themselves to venture into all the different sounds out there unless it has a chart number attached.

I think when people are excited about pop music "coming back this year!!" they're looking forward to it dominating pop culture again. More hip-hop and Spotify/streaming influenced chill electro "algorithm-core" songs have been rising in popularity, and even traditionally pure pop artists like Ariana are trying out monotone trap vocals instead of classic catchy melodies.

Also, lately the artists getting the most media exposure are more rappers, and less the fashionistas and divas ("pop girls") who serve the visuals many pop fans want.  Many are looking forward to a return to more indulgent, theatrical, infectious pure pop (we are Gaga fans after all and that was Peak Gaga) and less low key/edgy/masculine/hip-hop influenced pop.

It depends on what pop means.

Pop can be popular music, which could be the equivalent of mainstream music. It doesn't matter the genre.

Or pop, the genre. The deliberately perfectly crafted songs with earworms and catchy hooks, made to please the masses and sell.

The number of fans who didn't try to listen to C2C at least once says it all.

because most Gaga fans, not all, but most, live in  world that begins and ends with Gaga, and in the pop world they can make comparisons that validate Gaga as the best, the first, the most original, the most awarded, the most underrated, the most misunderstood, the most artistic etc.... They don't see past that because they don't want to hear about anything else.

Okay, I definitely agree with your sentiments about Gaga's art, but imagine the start of her career if she started with a jazz or different sound. Different genres appeal to different levels of exposure and draw different demographics. Although I like when she branches out, I understand what the pop genre did for her.  Also, pop is just short for popular music which has changed over the years.

Stand in the light, cast your shadow.

I don't care about what ****ing genre she does :saladga: I just want something new. I mean, Joanne and ASIB, even C2C, were refreshing to me.
