I think SOPHIE is interesting, talented. Surely. But I don't care for her solo work. I like a lot of industrial music, noise, pop, electro, etc etc. But her solo work always loses me, there will be aspects I enoy and then something I hate right alongside it. That being said I think her production contribution to pop music is really good and im interested to hear where she can take Lady Gaga, if whatever they made ends up on the album which I hope it does.

The hype is because her industrial sounds are literal dark pop

She definitely has a polarizing sound. I absolutely love it and find it so refreshing while also reminiscent of my favorite 90/2000s industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails. It's aggressive and industrial like Skrillex. All of those artists are edgy and subversive and not everyone likes them and I understand why. But I think they are kool. Remember that SOPHIE's solo work will be probably more experimental and her production for a pop artist will have  more catchy tricks and sleek noises and familiar pop elements that we love

People like her because she’s doing things that no other artists are doing right now. Yes, her solo material can be off putting but she’s much more versatile than that. The stuff she produces for other people is much poppier and catchier than her own stuff, while still retaining some of that edge and experimental quality.

If you want to have an idea about how a Sophie produced Gaga track would sound, don’t just listen to her stuff, listen to the songs she’s produced for Charli XCX.

Don't get me wrong, I like several of her songs. One of my favourite songs ever is It's Okay to Cry. But I find her to be severely overrated. I tried giving her latest album a complete listen and found it rather painful to listen to. When I hear her production, I imagine auto-tuned sounds of nails on a chalkboard and kitchen pots being thrown in the sink. A lot of her songs lack structure and are very repetitive. People say she is innovative and is the future of pop but I can't see it. I do think there is indeed a fine line between experimental and horrible music but I fail to see any artistic value in SOPHIE's work other than random processed vocals blasting over heavily distorted synths for 8 consecutive tracks. I would love to be given some insight and perhaps a different perspective. Personally, I would rather listen to other experimental EDM artists that a produce a more structured and refined pop sound like Grimes. Tell me your thoughts. Maybe I'm getting old.

OIL is not meant to be all fun and happy. It is about herself accepting who she really is. If you listen carefully, the first 3 songs are really open and aggressive as the idea of being trans is still new and kinda disturbing. Then the next few songs 'til "Pretending" let you drown in the instrumentation as she herself struggles with her identity. Then, on Immaterial, she says "It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl or a trans or whatever, you're special". With "Whole New World/Pretend World" she finally accepts herself as trans and says to herself "I looked into my eyes and expected a whole new world, but I got nothing but a pretend world".

Spoiler

At least it's my interpretation and I know the music's not for everyone
