She went trough tough times and the songs talk about depression, mental illness and stuff. The other songs are too submissive to be writen by "Lady Gaga": "You found the light in me that I couldn't find" (ARUTW), "I need you to inspire me when I can't inspire myself" (HM), "I pray that you lift me or I'm not quite myself" (ITA). So I think it's ok to prefer Shallow rather than her previous number one singles. Also, I think Shallow, even though it's not synthpop, follows Gaga "classic formula" of writing perfectly.
