That explains why she can't reach Paparazzi notes anymore, she was probably 17 or 18 when she recorded it.

Tbh judging from this and what we know of Def Jam at the time, in the mid-late 2000s they were mostly doing R&B music with acoustic twists. I believe Rihanna and Beyonce were on his label at the time or something, so he probably loved her acoustic energy and wanted her to present to him more songs like Second Time Around (which is a Beyonce demo) but she instead went him Rob Fusari and K&S era pop music like Dirty Ice Cream and Fancy Pants, he probably hated it.

But she got the last laugh because after she debuted a lot of Def Jam artists started taking influence from her by making electropop instead of R&B songs

My guess is, probably half of the songs we already have but different production and the rest were songs similar to Disco Heaven and Blueberry Kisses.

Or perhaps there was not a defined concept yet when she got dropped.

Smoking, drugs and drinking affected her voice because she did a lot of it in her late teens/early 20s

The original LG1 was probably:

1. Paparazzi

2. Beautiful Dirty Rich

3. Reel Cool

4. Disco Heaven

5. Vanity

6. Glitter & Grease

7. Fancy Pants

Thanks for this video, I always wondered if anyone had expressed regret about dropping her at Def Jam, but never actually researched into it. Glad to see he openly admits his mistake.

La Reid seems so nice. I want him to be my dad

It's lovely how he talks about the whole fiasco

Not true - I edited my original post. I misremembered something.

Well... Worked out for her in the end

And we got The Fame and this fanbase out of it. Neither would be complete without the other.

As Gaga said, it's not about how many times you hear no. Def Jam must be fuming when The Fame became the biggest selling digital album and TMBT2.0 made hundreds of millions.

There's also some misinformation about this.

She can sing those notes still. It has a different quality, texture, and timbre. Just because it isn't the feminine light tone, people think she isn't that high.

The highest note in Paparazzi in the original key is an Eb5. If you think Gaga can't belt that anymore, you haven't been paying attention. She actually does it much better now. Approaches it with a much better technique than just yelling a high note which she did when she was younger.  So even when her ability to yell very high notes may have gone down (she can't yell an F5 or G5 anymore other than once in DWUW), her ability to sing them when approached right has actually improved. She still can't do some notes she used to but Paparazzi isn't one of them.

The highest note of Paparazzi is the same as the highest note of Perfect Illusion after the key change. She doesn't do it every time but when she does it, she does it right. Correctly. And yes I know the PI high note sounds different from the Paparazzi high note. It's because they're different tone. Her tone has changed (and become better imo) but her ability hasn't gone down.

And that's only for belted notes. In her head voice, she actually sings much higher than that Paparazzi note. She did it in the Sound of Music tribute and has done it in parts of ASIB songs.

I'm fact, she did an amazing G5 and even A5 (!) in her head voice for Applause :) at the VMAs. That's 3 whole notes higher than that Paparazzi high note. Head voice is the best way to approach that note. Imo, no one should be belting a G5 unless they've got a very specific voice that allows them to do that.

@nicolasrumet @gagzus

Edit: In the bridge of Why Did You Do That, she belts (/shouts like she used to) an E5. That's higher than the Paparazzi or Perfect Illusion note. :huntyga: Also in the background vocals of Hair Body Face. And in the bridge of INLA ("I don't wanna KNOW this feeling" and "GIVE somebody else" and a few more times actually).

Thank God she got dropped from Def Jam. I would’ve dropper her myself it were up to me.

:ohwell:

All the demo’s sucked. No specific direction or substance. Nothing that made Stefani Germanotta, Lady Gaga.

:sure:

Imo she should’ve kept disco heaven/retro dance freak/summerboy off the album. Sound wise they stick out like JewelsNdrugs does on ARTPOP

Reject False Icons

I was curious too.

Btw I don't see the level of cohesion in the demos as in The Fame.

But I would have loved to hear more of Beatles/Gaga sound (Blueberry Kisses, Oh Well) what a great inspiration for your debut :tony:

Yes.

LA Reid talks about it.

He said he didn't like the demos so he dropped her.

Absolutely no disrespect or shade to LA Reid, but he also pushed for P!nk to not release M!ssundaztood, that album that made her a household name. This isn’t a diss at LA, but more of a statement on how sometimes artists have a better idea of what’s best for them than the labels do. Although, if he hadn’t dropped her, perhaps we never would have gotten The Fame. It’s funny how things work out like that.
