Britney has far outsold Beyoncé, actually. She is the fifth best-selling female artist of all time, and by far the youngest artist amongst those five.

Britney will never catch up to the number of awards Beyoncé has, but Beyoncé will never come close to selling as many albums as Britney has; her commercial success was nearly unparalleled.

Britney was also the best-selling female artist of the entire 2000s decade, despite her and Beyonce having debuted at around the same time, and is the second best-seller overall for the decade (Eminem is #1).

I knew Eminem was #1 but I thought for females Beyonce had sold more

Maybe it was just for singles...

She is since BTW days in my opinion. She was revolutionary in so many ways: music, performances, art, fashion... Even if she hadn't had success since then, I think she wouldn't have been forgotten.

She is on her way. She just needs one more humongous successful and impactful era to solidify her LEGEND status.

Does it matter? Damage is done

Definitely on her way to becoming one. She's only 10 years into her career so it might be a bit premature to call her a legend, but she's already an icon of our generation (in the same tier as Beyonce and Adele).

I love Adele but Lady Gaga has achieved more than Adele.

Adele has monstrous sales, yes, but Gaga has gone through seven studio albums, six tours and one residency, and ventured into successful acting roles, including getting an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She also did jazz, metal, rock, country, winning a Grammy for Cheek to Cheek.

Love Adele, she's lovely, but she is not near Gaga's legacy.

Beyonce is arguable so I'll allow that.

Yeah it’s super confusing, because you’ll wind up with very different total numbers depending on what’s actually being counted. But at least according to the Guinness World Book of Records, Britney has the title.

She is the first Legendary artist from the digital age, with the Super star quality of legends before her time (Madonna, Britney etc.)

the Oscar win has solidified her status as a legend to the General Public.

I'd say yes. She's achieved far far far more than many female artists did in the first ten years of her career.

She's also the only artist who has tried different things and be successful with it, doing multiple acting roles and getting nominated for and winning prestigious awards for them, and also dabbled into other genres like jazz, metal, rock and country when many just stayed in one.

Even if we're talking about one single genre, she still outshines them in terms of vocal delivery. But that's not to say she can't pull off an intense highly theatrical show, she still outdoes them in that aspect.

Like what more do you need before you can consider her a legend?

It is okay to admit Lady Gaga won. It doesn't hurt to say that.

How old? I'm just asking cuz in the second half of the time frame Beyonce has clearly sold more albums while in the first half of the century I would of guessed Britney

But yeah depends what u count. For Beyonce an obvious possible difference would be do you count Destiny's Childs sales since she was in it (and she was also the big star of the band anyway) or count just Beyonce solo

It's like Madonna being the most successful female artist of all time yet by some measures some ppl claim it's Mariah Carey

No. She hasn't reached the amount of success of other popstars like Nicki Minaj or Bebe Rexha.

I’ll have to search for the record; literally everything I’ve found thus far is totally contradictory regarding both Britney’s and Beyoncé’s sales! Like, even between the official sources at Billboard and RIAA, nothing is even remotely consistent. :wtfga:

And yeah, I always am curious about the Madonna/Mariah thing as well, because whenever I hear “X" is the best-selling female artist, it’s definitely one of these two women, but half of the sources claim Mariah is #1, while an equal amount say the same regarding Madonna.

And then the albums vs singles vs streaming sales...it’s a mess to figure out.

It's complicated cuz

- There's US Sales

- There's World Wide Sales

- There's Estimated/Claimed Sales

- There's Certified Sales

-Theres album sales

- There's Singles Sales

- There's overall sales combining both

- Now in the digital era there's Pure Sales vs SPS

There's so many different things to look at that depending what they are looking at the ranks are gonna change

This is how politicians bash eachother without actually lying (well some lie like Trump). They say 2 different things but often they are both technacly telling the truth

For example party in power may say we grew the economy 25% while in power

The opposition might say the economy stalled. Who's telling the truth?

The one in power will select the pure nominal GDP growth while the party that wants to make them sound bad will adjust for inflation for example and population growth

The annoying thing with data is there's so many ways to spin it :triggered:

Beyonce is arguably the biggest female artist of the 21st century (I'd say bigger than Britney Spears even)

She has a tone of critical claim and endless awards like Grammys

I think it's safe to call Beyonce a legend

PS: I dunno if call talent a "requirement". There's underground artists Drowning in talent and never become known and some legends like the Beatles can't sing to save their lives. Yes they wrote their own songs and played instruments but was their talent so big to justify being the biggest group of all time??? I think they were supper overated

There's a lot of factors that affect commercial success besides talent

Beyoncé is unable to expand her brand outside of music. She excells in what she does best, her brand: BEYONCÉ. Wich actually hasn’t much substance imo is also what bounds her to just music.

Gaga is quite the opposite. First she expanded her musical career by switching genres. Now she’s getting acclaim from the GP and critics for her acting. This says a lot about her potential within the acting industry. She has the critic support and the gp support (for now).

Side note: Gaga will always be praised for the originality she entered the commercial market with and making everybody in general stepping up their game, including Beyoncé.

———————————————————

Either way, their roads to succes are incomparable. Beyoncé as a member of Destiny’s child can’t be separated from her career as a solo artist. Just because she never would be where she is without that build up.

Gaga is way more diverse in all aspects. She will never be as coordinated as Beyoncé when it comes to dancing. But at least whe get heartfelt shows instead of Robo-perfection. When Gaga dies they will not only praise her for her talents, awards and achievements.. they will also praise her for her Kind and loving personality. And for her message to create a kinder and braver world.

Beyoncè barely shows her real personality wich makes me question if she even haves one.

Xoxo

Yes since Bad Romance. I think that's what solidified her place in history

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

I wouldn’t put Adele on the same level, because while she is extremely successful and puts out great music to me she doesn’t have the same lasting impact Gaga or Beyoncé have. Those two are on the top of their game right now and in my opinion on a different level than the rest of the artists of this generation. Taylor Swift is also very close to that level.
