Kimmo 80,613
Some voters said they lost their zeal for “A Star Is Born” after the film converted only one of its five Golden Globe nominations into a win (best song).Others faulted Lady Gaga, who plays the main role, for giving speeches on the awards trail (the Globes, National Board of Review) that struck them as cloying. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/14/movies/best-picture-oscars-voters.html The pop star turned thespian just took Oscar campaigning to a whole new level. On Thursday, Gaga unveiled a massive back tattoo paying tribute to “La Vie en Rose,” the Édith Piaf song she belts out during her first scene in ASIB—and also the tune she was signing at a 2016 cancer benefit at Napster cofounder Sean Parker’s house when her eventual costar and director Bradley Cooper decided she would be the perfect Ally. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/lady-gaga-just-took-oscar-213552755.html “In November, Shinola notebooks stamped with the lyrics to “Shallow” in Lady Gaga’s handwriting were sent to voters in a presentation box with a DVD screener of “A Star Is Born.” The notebook was followed by a double-disc soundtrack on vinyl featuring posters of Cooper and Gaga gazing lovingly at each other, as well as vintage-style rocker T-shirts” https://variety.com/2019/biz/awards/oscar-campaign-spending-1203113199/ Hottie Detector
Ryusei 61,110
what controversy? Did you mean campaigning? I am guessing she'll win the song award for shallow still. Honestly I only really looked into this whole campaigning thing this year because of ASIB and I can't take the oscars seriously anymore... It's all about putting on a perfect front and creating a narrative and pretending to care about certain issues. Bunch of clownery, it's not about the movies and performances at all. The only time your performance matters is to get nominated and even then there is already political sh*t at work. I'm glad when we get one for Shallow and never have to think about oscars again tbh.... Musery

You have to invite the voters to dinners, parties, etc before the nominations to establish some type of friendship, if you do it wrong you lose. It’s very very sad. It’s all about who you know and how much they like you unfortunately Hottie Detector
sipthistea 21,099
Who cares? She's already a legend, with or without the awards. Her talent won't go away if she loses.
edgeofglory1 25
I hope so. ASIB has lost every major award, I hope she won't lose BOS either.
FinnishGypsy 921
I’d be shocked (and not just as a stan) if she loses BOS. It’s simply the biggest and best song to be nominated, and resonated with the GP unlike any other nominee could even hope. I always thought BA was a reach, given the Oscars history of giving out, what are effectively, lifetime achievement awards to avoid acknowledging they ****ed up by not awarding an industry legend decades earlier. (Not to say Glenn isn’t deserving; both her and Gaga deserve it for different reasons, IMO, but I think it’s going to the former and that’s a hard thing to argue against). ETA: I’m irritated by the Bradley snubs, honestly. He absolutely deserved a nomination (AT THE VERY LEAST) for Best Director, and I can’t believe he hasn’t won ANYTHING at the major award shows pertaining to his brilliant directorial debut or acting performance. And, quite honestly, I still think ASIB objectively deserves Best Picture (especially against the critically-panned BR), but I’m not holding my breath. Well,...she fits no mold, but specifically in this discourse- not the Oscar-winner mold. If in June we had asked do we want a bomb at the box office, a worthless album and no widespread critical acclaim - but an Oscar Winner, I know I would say F-them! LilyLark 10,095
I have kept up with the Oscar race for several years. The campaigns are always full of petty drama and tbh I was a bit worried about Gaga since I know they often love to drag women, especially ones with an inner theater kid (several years ago and Anne Hathaway). The main -drama- I thought might come from the anonymous ballots, which are often awful, and a certain Madonna stan journalist who has bashed Gaga in the past. But Barry Jenkins subtweeted, in a very obvious way, the THR for publishing the anonymous ballot, which tend to be the cruelest and pettiest of all the Oscar gossip, and they seem like they may have stopped from publishing those because while the criticism has been going on for years...a popular, well liked, very respected director saying "hey, this sucks" may have finally convinced them that publishing those pieces could hurt future interviews. And the journalist has basically shut up. But honestly I wouldn't call it controversial at all in terms of Gaga... The "what went wrong" articles are pretty standard for any front runner that sputters out, and I only saw a few of them. The latter bit you pulled out is on WB and not unusual for campaigning. The middle is some snarky misreading into her tats, but I don't think -most-of the coverage was that way and I also don't think Academy voters are even aware or care. I do think the crying, not the actually content of her speeches but the emotional nature, may have had a small negative influence—but obviously not enough to negate her wins. People were annoyed with Bradley for various petty, mostly unfai reasons, and while it's unfortunate for him it kind of worked out for the best for Gaga because they were too focused on him to really spend much time snarking unfairly on her. And the real controversy, imo, on film twitter has been that the Oscar voters have been ignoring that behind the scenes the Green Book team has a sex creep and a Trump supporter, some of Viggo's comments, and the whole BoRhap thing, and in turn the mostly older, semi-conservative Oscar voters taking umbrage to people calling them out. See the anonymous ballot where the guy talked about a short film in a misogynistic way and claimed the Academy had never been racist in part because of the backlash. LilyLark 10,095
I think she'll win the Oscar, because even tho the anonymous ballots aren't that reliable (as plenty of film journalists have pointed out, as many of them want them gone from the mildest to the overly critical THR ones)—she pops up the most often on them as their choice for BOS. And most Oscar pundits think she has it in the bag and she's swept all the previous awards. IF she loses, I wouldn't blame Gaga or the campaign or WB. I think it would be because the Academy tends to have a lot of older white men, despite recently making some changes, who might like a more -traditional- song like the one from Buster Scruggs. Or, and this could also happen, the voters are very familiar with Diane Warren and don't want her to lose for the 11th time. I would say she has a 95% chance of winning, but considering all the petty bullshit that goes on in the Oscars if she loses I wouldn't be entirely shocked.
