If you're going to cancel any artist in history who was racist, homophobic, sexist, discriminatory of anything that was rejected back then, good luck building yourself a solid culture.

I can't at y'all saying we shouldn't judge him for the times, as if y'all as gay boys wouldn't have been bullied and abused to a much higher degree if you lived back then. Slaveowners aren't bad? We shouldn't fault them for beating slaves, because that was the norm? If you're actively contributing to oppression, you're.. an oppressor lmao you're not innocent

If u or any of us were raised 100 years ago there's no telling what our view would be on things like racism

Many of us may not even wanna admit we were a part of the LGBT and be homophobic ourselves

U say "times were no excuse" but honestly, to escape social and cultural norms completely u have to be very forward thinking and think very outside the box. A small fraction of ppl are like that.

Liberals usually are a few years to a few decades ahead of their time. That's why change happens gradually. Most liberals 50 years ago would be hardcore conservatives now on most things that's just how it goes

Values keep changing. In 100 years more, there's things you and I may think are normal now that people from the future would judge us on

Many people. Discrimination is a choice.

Just because it’s considered the norm doesn’t make it right.

"MANY"

100 years ago Whites that didn't have at least some degree of racism (even if it's subtle prejudice) honestly not many. People who saw nothing wrong with homosexuality even fewer

Ur making it sound like it's so easy to think be accepting

I wonder how many of u raised 100+ years ago that was raised in a culturally homogeneous idea that love is for a man and a woman and were constantly being exposed to the thinking that blacks are inferior would not have at least some hint of prejudice

It's so easy to think that now when ur raised in a time were new thinking is accepted and there's more diversity

I was first raised in a rural white village in Portugal that always had preconceptions of other races and my parents are super religious and are dead set against homosexuality (as were basically everyone in the village)

To me that was just the norm I didn't think twice

I took time as I grew older and got exposed to diversity and new ideas for some of my opinions to change.

TBH even 10 years ago my transition wasn't complete. I was still one of those ppl who think that if I have a black friend it means I'm not racist :rip:

My point is how ur raised and culture has a huge impact on u... U simply can't judge people's character from back then with the standards of today

In his interview, he states that he thinks it's proper we colonized America, and the Native Americans were "selfishly" keeping the land to themselves. You don't need to be a philosopher to think that is offensive, nor completely inaccurate. The hardships and difficulties minorities faced existed, idg why he/they're absolved of their wrongdoing bc it was common.

Not saying it was easy at the time. But it was a choice.

Plenty of people weren’t racist and bigots. Probably hiding because the opposite was the norm.

Being a bigot seems like harder work. Being kind is free and effortless.

I'm not gonna excuse every wrong thing he did. I mean stealing land is common sense. For a very long time the idea that stealing is wrong has been widely accepted.

But in other aspects ppl have been talking about like homophobic and racist I mean... Ppl genuinely didn't know any better unless they were very good at thinking outside the box and questioning societies views (which few ppl did back then with the limited education's of the era). Ppls mentalities were simply too basic. Ppl were taught this is the way and for most that was it

Also I edited my post to include some more personal info that makes a relevant connection but u quoted it before I added it in so maybe u can read that too it's a lot to retype

I agree it was a choice... But u gotta admit it was a LOT harder to reason things and arrive at some conclusions that now most ppl tho

When ur raised in a homogeneous society where almost everyone follows a stand and ur taught some beliefs all ur life as the norm, it's not easy to think outside the box and think differently

Obviously it's not impossible... But I'm saying it would be hard enough that I think some on this site are judging ppl from that era too harshly

Who knows what kind of backward thinking many of us would have if we grew up in that time instead of now.

Also read my comment above again. I added some personal recollections that are relevant to this

Maybe my personal experience helps me relate more easily to these ppl than some of you

This wasn’t a hundred years ago. It was in the seventies. The 70s, in many ways, were more liberal than the 80s and 90s.

The US had been through the civil rights movement and was in the midst of the Vietnam protests. We were in the middle of the Peace/Love/Drugs cultural moment. Woodstock was in 1969.

Everyone in the US in the early seventies was NOT racist and homophobic!

The eighties brought the AIDS scare and Reagan with his Rupert Murdoch News machine. In many ways, the US was more conservative in the eighties and nineties, than in the sixties and seventies.

At the point of this interview, John Wayne was living in a liberal era and had been in Hollywood for decades, which meant he had been around the most progressive people in the country for twenty or thirty years. He had been exposed to progressive ideas and people for decades. He wasn’t some sheltered kid from another country.

Emigrante

I mean. Human rights are human rights, doesn't matter if it was 50s/60s/70s or nowadays. I don't get this thing that it was different times. If you are oppressor, you are oppressor. Just use your brain sometimes and think if it's right to behave like that, doesn't matter what percentage of people around you act like that.

EDIT:

And I by no means judge Gaga because of a song being called John Wayne. She probably didn't know about that and she probably meant the cowboy stereotype. That's all.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.
