What I don't understand is how can someone be PART OF a religious institution but then acknowledge only what seems good to him/herself. For example, being from Italy, all of my friends are catholic, and the catholic church is homophobic af, but they don't believe in that aspect 

How can someone choose a religion but then not take the whole package?  If you don't believe in everything that's official from the catholic institution, then you believe in another version of that religion, which is NOT the chatholic one

All major organized religions are homophobic. If you and your friends/family/church are liberal and tolerant you are the exception, not the standard.

I feel like Americans don't realise how big of a threat Islam CAN be to the LGBT people, I live in Belgium in the heart of a place where mostly immigrants, a lot of whom are muslim, live and the vast majority of homophobia comes from those corners. I'm not saying every muslim is like this because I know plenty that do support or atleast remain neutral but to pretend like it's not an issue is just ignorant. And this title is really not Islamophobic.

I feel this may be down to interpretation. I know some aspects of the bible are taken differently because of the language that was used and we can’t really figure out 100% what each and every part means?

Yes we know there are tolerant individuals and progressives of every religion, but if those churches and systems are on the whole embodiment of oppression and discrimination against people’s sexuality, then we can’t help but see them that way.

Instead of asking people to see religion in a different light while homophobic crimes commited by religious people happen literally every second, why not try to change the latter fact? Religion, as in the system, the church, the doctrine, must see a widespread large scale change in order to be accepted by everyone. 

Keep pointing out that ‘hey I’m a Muslim/ Catholic/ Buddhist/ etc. who don’t spew hatred and believe in equality’ while millions of your fellows DO certainly won’t alleviate the distrust we have toward your religion.

Change can only come from within. You who are not part of some religion can’t change it because it will come off as hateful and as disrespectful. I who am part of this can. And my children (if I have them) will learn from me and because of that will be more accepting and more aware. I am doing what I can as individual and I can see progress. It’s small but it’s there. Some of you made good arguments about me or anyone being part of religions that are “hateful” -  I’m religious because it gives me hope, because it helped me to go though some hardships in my life. Do I necessarily agree with everything? No. Ofc not. I can’t believe in what some people say because I believe God is good and that God doesn’t hate anyone and that we can’t be hated on for loving someone. I’m muslim and I interpret my religion in my own way.

When I see things like this I get so sad and angry, that I sometimes think religion should be banned. But of course I know that would never work. Education is the only thing that will help. I do however think there should be restrictions on religious freedom.

Yes I understand. And I did not say that it would be easy to change a religion, unless people start a different denomination, which is what they’re doing, but the mainstream churches , with the label ‘Muslim/ Catholic/ Baptist etc will always be the ones associated with hatred and intolerance.’ 

Of course it’s your folks’ business to figure out how to reform your religion. Maybe religious hatred will die out in the future, when liberal theists outnumber conservatives. Maybe not. Idk. However, for the time being, people will see religious groups as the symbol of oppression, and I feel like you don’t need to come to the defense every time it happens.

It’s not really that I feel the need to protect it but to make you all who will read this aware that there are people who support you in every community and that there is hope for better times. Racism was something that was acceptable 70 years ago but look at how it’s today. It’s still there BUT big majority is accepting the fact that every race is equal. Someday it will be the same for LGBTQ community.

It's not personal, I'd say this to any person who believes in homophobic religions. I've said it to my family members who are Christians.

Can you understand my anger? You say your change is small toward correcting the religion while queer people are dying today. Your religions have a body count of people like me who did not deserve to die. If I'd been born in a less acceptable place, there's a solid chance this conversation would never happen because I'd be dead.

I will say I massively respect you for standing your ground amidst a thread of people questioning and against you, though I completely disagree with your stance.
