Didymus 34,379
About the OP's question: everything about BTW was religiously inspired. It's all about providing a safe space, a church so to speak, for her fans, think Electric Chapel (which, importantly, is what she wanted to call her tour at one point). Constructing something new based on old values of love and acceptance. I mean, just a few days ago she again mentioned during her show that Christianity is all about those values and that there are way too many self-styled Christians who don't live by them. I think we have to understand those references through that lens. Around the time of BTW I remember her saying to some interviewer that she identified as a Catholic but that she also thought that Catholicism these days is more about closing doors and that she was more interested in opening them. You be the judge. This has already been answered, but I just wanna add that sometimes when she used to sing it live she'd say "I've got the same DNA, but I was born this way". Meaning that no matter how she acts, or looks, or dresses herself and no matter how much she changes on the outside over time, it's still the same person underneath. I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Does she really say "but born this way" though? I thought it was "b-born this way" in her classic "roma roma-ma", "Juda, Juda-a-ah", "P-p-p-poker face", "Sha-ha, sha-ha-a-llow" etc. way. Sadly that part wasn't included in the booklet
SKANK 14,288
"Church" is slang, you'd use it in place of "amen" to convey that you agree with something.

Your post would have left me questioning this myself, but I was at the jazz and piano engagement and she was very clear. Right before DON'T BE A DRAG JUST BE A QUEEN. It's faint but it's there. Study before making fun of the most experienced monsters. As to why, well, I guess it makes sense, given the very religious undertones of the song. The message of the song goes against what the Church says, but not against what Christianity is about. To be fair though, even some of the fans who have followed from the beginning sometimes don't realise a hidden vocal is there. Such as the one from 3.59 in Bad Romance. Oh yeah I always hear that part, but I think she says "jerk"? I always sing it like "Don't- Don't be a- ... jerk." hmmm

(I'll always have the) same DNA, but (now I choose to be) born this way. You could also interpret it as: we all have human DNA, but still every human is different. I always thought it meant that we all have the same DNA. If you take the religious imagery, we all come from Adam and Eve so we got the same DNA, but we're born with some differences. I didn't think about your interpretation but I like it !
