I doubt GG have seen "The Wife" (Glenn Close)

I have seen The Wife and, for an indie film, it had a decent audience and made $8 million in the U.S. It is a small film, but there is no reason Glenn should not win. I love Gaga but it is hard to compete with an actress who has six Oscar nominations and 45 years of experience. I don't think it would be remembered solely as an overdue Oscar for Glenn. The Wife is a solid movie and, of course, she is brilliant in it.

Overdue, my ass..... Close already has 2 Golden Globes under her belt, there was nothing overdue

But the Globes fancy themselves as a precursor to the Oscars where Close is an infamous six time loser, a record she shares with Thelma Ritter and Deborah Kerr. That's what the OP is referring to, I believe.

Well the Oscars are the Oscars, and the Golden Globes are the Golden Globes, don't know what else to say :wtfga: Maybe next time Globes, don't try to be a precursor to what you aren't then :ohwell:

I loved "The Wife." I think it's interesting that two of the three frontrunners--Close and Gaga--in the race this year were notably understated and underplayed performances. Coleman's over the top performance is the outlier in terms of tone.

but in general I am still hopeful... I think there is a camp of voters who will vote for Gaga and a camp who will vote for anyone besides Gaga on principal. The reason she didn't stand a chance tonight is that Coleman and Close were in different categories, meaning that the votes of that non-Gaga camp weren't split between Coleman and Close like they will be at the Oscars. When the non-Gaga camp splinters into Coleman and Close camps, I think Gaga has more of a chance to compete.

The Wife was okay but Close was magnificent in it and totally deseves her win. The look on her face during "the acceptance speech" scene alone makes a good winner. Let's not be bitter and criticize her win on the basis of nothing! Y'all fave didn't leave the building empty handed, so let's be grateful!

I'm sorry, but I thought I had just witnessed the Golden Globes :oprah: Maybe we'll talk about overdue when, idk... when the actual Oscars happen maybe? :trollga:

God your words are so rude. Someone hurt you today?:hmm:

You do know GG and CriticChoice tend to decide winners for Oscars prediction, right? Like they usually want to lead the whole award season trend and cause a sweep for the actors/actresses. (For example, they awarded Allison/Sam/Frances last year and caused a following sweep for them even though most of the awards before GG awarded Laurie/Willem/Sally.)

So I mean...I believe some of the HFPA members voted just because they knew Close is an overdue actress and  tried to set a following award sweep for her. And when we talked about "overdue" about the actors/actresses, we generally refer to Oscars, don't we?

(Of course I'm rooting for Gaga cuz she's my Queen and I love her but) I just watched The Wife and Glenn deserves every award she gets this season. :udidnt:

Except - and sorry for repeating myself - that's the Golden Globes we're talking about... I know the Globes are considered the antechamber of the Oscars, but though they can be an indicator, saying both ceremonies always mirror each other would be a blatant lie. If it were the case, there would be literally 0 suspense to the Oscars.

And gosh, was I rude? A bit pissed would be quite right, but rude, I mean.... Go spend a minute in Twitterland and come back afterward to tell me about it :laughga:

The Wife was not the best movie of the season, and yes Glenn’s Oscar is overdue, but to be honest, if she wins it , it won’t be less deserving. Sometimes an Oscar is also about recognising a great artist and Gleen deserves it. Who cares if it’s not her best performance, it’s a powerful role with a complex character and Glenn Close is an Oscar-worthy actress.
