Why did Gaga change the key for Paparazzi live performances (2009-2013)?

HAHAHAAH YOU SHOULDVE SEEN 2009-2011 me. I would literally watch the Paparazzi performance from EVERY show to see how she performed it. Because no other song of hers had such a different way of performance each time. At the time, Paparazzi was my favorite song of hers. So I WAITED for the day she hit both high notes, and when it finally happened, I basically died.

Duriing the entirety of the Monster Ball (both 1.0 and 2.0)  and Born This Way Ball, Paparazzi was sung at the album key.

But whether she sung the melody or the harmony during the chorus, or if she hit the Promise I’ll be Kind, was a hit and miss an entirely random.

There were some performances where she just sung the harmony throughout the entire chorus.

But her hitting both high nights, while performing at album key, was really something special and amazing :’) 

Omg that's the one thing I low key enjoyed about her singing the song in its normal key since it was kind of a surprise every night how she'd sing it.  Conversely, that's the one thing I don't like when she lowers the key, since there's more consistency and less change between every night. (Which isn't really a bad thing per se, it's just more fun as a stan to see her change it up.)

I swear the normal key was too hard for her voice? Around 2009 she stopped performing several songs that were way too vocally demanding (Paparazzi, Eh Eh)

A friend who dislikes Gaga back in the day told me that "Paparazzi" is her best song and "very well written" melody wise.

I'm tempted to agree, because that song's studio version is just so good. It's so hard to sing. 

I think Gaga recorded it when she still had her "teen" voice lol... In her early 20s her voice changed a bit. So she can't sing it anymore like the studio version.

I just always assumed that the album version of Paparazzi is one of those song that is produced to sound high pitched just because high pitched songs work better commercially. It's just so appealing to the ears when you listen to Paparazzi. But I always thought that without whatever they use in studio to high pitch songs, Gaga could never really sing it in the album version way. It's not because of a lack of talent, technic, or anything, it's just because Gaga has a natural low pitched voice that usually doesn't allow to hit high notes in a high pitch. 

I don't know **** about keys but that was just my opinion on the subject

Her best vocal delivery remains this imo. Her high notes are something else.

Truly shows the song works perfectly as a theatrical number and a stripped down ballad.

Hahaha it’s actually all her natural voice in the studio version.

Paparazzi was recorded in 2006, along with Brown Eyes and Summerboy (I think the three oldest songs on the album).

All three songs of a much higher pitched voice, sometimes compred to Gwen Stefani. 

If you listen to all her pre-Fame unreleased songs, they all also have the same voice. Along with many pre-Fame performances.

So, thankfully, there’s no studio voice alteration in those songs  Her voice has just changed so much from when she was 18/19

Sis. There's a high F# in DWUW. Pre-Fame, she even did a G. After that, I think strenuous performances, singing, exertion, and smoking took a toll.

However, she has learned to sing very high notes once again, thanks to her recent training with resonance and placement (especially now that she mixes her head voice more -- think Applause bridge at JWT -- and sings in purely head voice sometimes -- think ASIB songs like ARUTW on the "all choked up" and INLA on first chorus).

 

OT: I'm glad she's doing Paparazzi in the high key again. She can do it, so why not? Always sounds great when singers push their highest limits. Obviously not on every song but a Paparazzi and a Perfect Illusion (original key) every now and then is good. And on the other end of the spectrum, a Just Another Day in A.

I feel like Paparazzi studio version is actually a little too high at some points. Like, it's a great song and I love it but it can have a Perfect Illusion effect on the chorus when you're listening with headphones on high volume. It has a very girly voice, yes, but I think the VMA version in the original key would sound the best.

That's not true (other than Summerboy). Those are all Fusari songs, yes, but Gaga said that her label wanted her to write a song about the Paparazzi for her album The Fame as it would be relevant to the title. That means it must have been after the Fame was commissioned and she was signed by Interscope. 2007 at least. Fusari confirmed that too. They were not sure where to go with it because "paparazzi" is a hard word to sing too. So they broke it in true Gaga fashion ("papa-papa") and also made it as a love song metaphor because that's an easily relatable pop song for most people.

Paparazzi was either the last or the second last song she did with Fusari. Fusari once revealed that Paparazzi was made after they broke up and that's why it's sort of a dark song. It was also the end of their creative relationship. They said it was done. Paparazzi was actually one of those songs that was not written in 10 minutes. It took a long time because they had no ideas and somehow it ended up as the masterpiece it is. All the darkness made it into the song.

I think it's possible that in Brown Eyes, she's talking about writing the song Paparazzi when she says ("Get your last fix and your last hit. Grab your old girl with her new tricks. Honey, yeah, it's no surprise that I got lost in your brown eyes.")

It's because Fusari had brown eyes. Paparazzi was gonna be their last hit. She was his old girl. And it's sad.

What is funny os that the whole interpretation changes cause She needs to Sing lighter. This is a gem, the whole performance is good. Pitty she got tired. 

For me i like her drama and passion but a bit more of lightness would give us good different content

Her live performances until the ARTPOP era used to be very dark and heavy singing most of the time. Imagine her singing even Judas live. She's started singing lighter since and now can also go between styles. Queen of getting better.

She's done heavily dramatic tone like Dope and also light on the same song IWBWY. Then light on most of ASIB. Slightly more dramatic on Joanne. Very light on The Cure.

Yeah, even in btw there were great momentos. In fact i loved her voice especially in that era.

But its more the phrasing. There is a good legato here, still She has a bit tendency to start the tone from under, which is normal in pop stars.

But you can see the fruits of asib, She was dragging most of her songs after ARTPOP and at enigma i was surprised how She was more precise in rythm and more energetic. You can Sing in full voice metal style and be light, She actually did it well a couple of Times. Its good cause She needs to dance

But She really is amazing. Its a bit sad but i cant not compare this scene with awkward interaction gagaxpetga.
