Like they are not in the beginning phases of a relationship anymore (in the SHALLOW water) but instead their lives are becoming more and more intertwined, and they are depending on each other, symbolized through how far into the ocean and away from the coast they are. The lyrical I wants to make a relationship deeper and encourages the love interest to join them and go from just a worldly to a spirtual bond. I'll never meet the ground. There is so much more to see than what can be met by the eye and the limit to explore things is nearly endless. Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us. If you are mentally absolutely beyond the stage of just looking at things from the surface, you are basically immune to any insult or criticism hurled at you for shallow things. We're far from the shallow now. The love interest has been convinced to expand the relationship and now the two people share a really deep, almost unshakeable bond.
