I mean, Dangerous Woman had a lot of great pop songs with cute visuals, and NTLTC and GIAW (and, to an extent, TLIC) really seemed like she was a Pop Icon™ in the making. And then, well, other things happened. Not that it's necessarily bad, all considering 2010's pop music isn't necessarily any deeper or better than what Ariana is releasing right now. I think I personally just thought she was going in a much different direction than trendy hip-hop. But if that's her thing, that's her thing.
