I think Clint had a different setup in mind. I think he wanted the the titular character to be black. After things didn't work out with Beyonce, Esperanza Spalding was attached to the project for a while (IIRC). I think Esperanza is incredibly talented and would have been great. Ultimately, the end result with Gaga was absolutely perfect though.

Clint is kind of an awful person. I just read all about his abusive relationship with Sondra Locke, not to mention he is a Republican. He's not Gregory Peck or Mr. Rogers, so I'm not going to exactly be sorry to read about anyone dragging him. Plus, it's not as if he reads social media anyway. 💁🏼‍♀️

Very few people would have heard about Gaga's casting and been like "oh yeah, she's gonna smash this." Making your lead a pop star with minimal acting credits in a serious drama is a risk. It paid off though.

Just because someone is a Republican, doesn't mean they are instantly bad, just different views. I am not Republican, but that doesn't mean I have to instantly think someone is bad because they think differently than me.
