Did BTW Hurt Gaga's Populism?

I just don't think any other popstar would survive that era. Pro-gay, religious, alienating visuals and imagery as well as Gaga deliberately making herself look unappealing. I just can't see Rih, Taylor or Beyoncé surviving that. ☠️

I feel as though after BTW, Gaga become a niche gay act. Do you agree?

I’m not sure she’s ever been an image for the “normal people” ever since she became popular. She was still considered weird and different when she dropped JD and PF. Everyone was used to her being crazy, pro-gay, religious (TFM), etc.

But they weren't used to her pro-gay views being the topic of her music. That's a huge distinction.

And? People already knew she was pro-gay. Homophobes didn’t all of the sudden start to hate her when she dropped BTW. Maybe their hatred for her increased but she’s always been very disliked by those people, especially during the Monster Ball, she was preaching almost every show.

You've gotten the chronology wrong. "Born This Way" the single was #1 on the charts for weeks. She was enormously popular at that time. She became pretty darn overexposed after the album came out though, and then when she messed up her hip she faded into obscurity for like a year. Then she came back with Applause which was decent but not a runaway hit especially since it was overshadowed by Roar and the perceived competition between Gaga and Katy (still, Applause was in the top 10 for weeks), and it was really the ARTPOP album era that was just too messy and artsy-fartsy for people to get into.

On the BTW era, like yeah Judas was a poor single choice but that didn't hurt her popularity with anyone who already liked her, just gave people who disliked her another reason not to. Months later I was hearing "You and I" on Z100 like every hour, and I don't mean payola. People liked her during that era, they were just getting tired of her.

Or Rihanna's Te Amo, Distubia.

And no it didn't hurt Gaga's populism. It cemented her Little Monters to be Little Monters for life.

POPULISM? Did you mean popularity? Because I think she was more populist during the BTW era than any other moment of her career.

Well, some of my male (and female) straight friends used to love Gaga until the Born This Way album because she didn't look "petty" and "sexy" anymore. And because she crowned herself as the Queen of gays and stuff. So yeah she alienated some of her "fans" (fake fans anyway) but, by doing whatever the **** she wanted to do with BTW, she stablished herself as a true icon and not just another pop bitch, in my opinion.

It certainly impacted her negatively for a certain period of time. 

But, in the long term, Born This Way will be / is Gaga's legacy and defining message. 

She carries through the values of BTW in all of her work, too - even as she, and her music, matures.

lol this reminds me that on New Years Eve 20XX (can't remember what year) the terrible douchy bar I was in played Marry the Night right before midnight. Like, cool that it's a Gaga song but it should have been ANY other Gaga song. But there were plenty of people there who loved it. I really feel like people just got tired of her and moved on, not "ugh she's too pro-gay this year" or anything like that.

Yes it did but in my opinion what hurt her career the most was her decision to look ugly af during half of the era.
