Christians need to respect and understand the entire world doesn't want to be Christian. It has an interesting mythos, but the fact this guy could only view the people of this island as Satanic savages shows he is not a nice person. He had no interest in learning about their religion. Their mythology. What they believed in. He wanted to convert them. No ifs, and, or buts. And people should find their own religion, if they want that part of their identity, not have a religion forced upon them. And please do not think you can assume anything about my beliefs. I am an omnist witch. According to most people on this damn site, I'm probably the stupidest person to walk the earth. I can see the good of religion. But completely forsaking the bad things is what leads to repetition of them. Again, it's sad that your view of missionary work and sharing the word of god is very negatively biased. It should never be forced to people, like how the Westerner conquistadors forced it on other nations/tribes. I don't know where you got those very biased views of "take my religion with no Ifs and no buts", but that is NOT missionary work. That kind of abuse is very much how the Western conquerors misused religion, transformed it into a weapon for better control of their colonies, the lands they plundered and raped, all for Greed and Power. Again, that is VERY MUCH different from missionary work. Religion's origins definitely did not come from the need to control people, as what you are unfortunately implying. The Scriptures, throughout the centuries and until today, was and is still being misused and perverted (edited) by several groups and personalities for their OWN gain (Again it is people's GREED and hunger for POWER). My religion does not teach hate, all that it teaches is Service to others and Self-control, so I don't see how this is a threat to the world where in fact what it does is it gives us God's principles to subdue and change people's hearts away from whatever hurtful human nature we have. And, missionary work will always be relevant to any Day or Age, as long as there are willing and sincere people out there who wants to SHARE (never to force) what is making their lives better and perhaps complete. This happiness needs to be shared. Just like how we share our love for Lady Gaga, despite all the flack we get from other fandoms and the GP.

nikola 4,342
Am I supposed to feel sorry for this man... Nah... I am only sorry for his family... He knew that it was illegal to go there and he knew that it's dangerous... And yet he still went there... I call that STUPID... And for what reason... To share fairy tales of his imagery friend... Again STUPID... No one wanted him there... He tried to force his stories to people that live in peace on their little island... I've got an "F" and a "C" and I got a "K" too And the only thing that is missing is a bitch like "U"

I mean yeah it was his own fault but a loss of life has meaning, he probably had a family and people who loved him. It's just sad. Him being there was an insensitivity to death... If he had done his research he would know that he likely carried germs/diseases that those people have no restiance to and would've wiped them all out easy. He was literally close to committing mass murder himself.
Adampervez 603
Lol he can rot in hell for all I care Missionary work is responsible for the death of MILLIONS throughout world history. We've all read about how Europeans brought diseases to the 'new' world and caused almost all of them to perish extremely fast. He also broke the law. This isn't sad at all. He was dumb af and I'm glad there's one less piece of trash in the world phobias that disgusting coloniser mindset (I'm expecting a WP for this lol)
Delulu Rogers 7,649
Y'all are being so insensitive. Yes, it was dumb of him to go and he should have seen it coming but killing is never okay. Do I kill the jehovah witnesses that come knocking on my door trying to convert me? Or the people in downtown toronto preaching with signs and microphones their religion to us? Also I think everyone is forgetting that these tribal people don't know any other language but their own and definitely don't know anything abut other religions or cultures. Chances are they captured and killed him before he even got out his book from his bag and preached one word. I feel sorry for his family and I feel sorry for this tribe that is so violent and barbaric.

That J 12,166
I'm sorry but there is something kinda funny about him saying "God told him to go there"...so God basically said DIE. How lovely. It's not ha ha funny ...more just a sad kind of interesting thing. Ya know certain places just are not gonna take to you coming over and telling them what to believe in. I appreciate the idea behind it to a degree but Idk ...God also gives common sense. I hate this for his family and friends tho. I'm sure he really thought he was doing the right thing. It's a weird story. The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw

This is a civilisation that has been untouched for 30,000 years and do not want to be exposed to the western world. Bottom line is, leave them be and they will leave YOU be. In my messy era. Diamonster 1,786
He died by the law of the land he went to They are not us, they don't have the same society, everyone knows they kill foreigners so. I'm glad they protect themselves their lives probably just fine without having to pay taxes and ****, not everyone wants to be part of all this. Also what pisses me off is, the damage he wanted to make, this people have their own untouched culture and all and if he had been successful in this, he'd have just killed all of that (mind you also killing them with our diseases)
elijahfan 27,481
Will we never ****ing learn? We Europeans have already perpetrated the genocide of native Americans trying to "spread the word of God", why can't we just let people live their lives the way they want? Not to mention approaching this tribe was incredibly irresponsible in the first place for health issues, since this population hasn't been exposed to the same illnesses we occidentals are immune to nowadays - so this guy could have basically killed the whole tribe by the mere fact of going there. Or the people in downtown toronto preaching with signs and microphones their religion to us? You can't compare this situation to Jehovah witnesses trying to convert you. That's ridiculous. They are not an immediate threat to your life and the life of everyone you know. This man was an IMMEDIATE threat to the people in this island. Western people coming in contact with indigenous tribes often means death. It does not mean annoyance, like how you feel about others trying to convert you. Not to mention, he tried to approach them two times before. His boat was attacked with arrows the first time. The second time his kayak was broken. It was clear he wasn't welcome. And he still decided to go to the island a third time. Apparently talking to them about Jesus was not only worth his life, but the lives of the people in the island. He knew what he was doing, he didn't care. 7 hours ago, ChrisC said: Also I think everyone is forgetting that these tribal people don't know any other language but their own and definitely don't know anything abut other religions or cultures. They want to be left alone, so leave them be. This man didn't make a dumb decision. He made a selfish one that put a whole tribe in danger. I feel sorry for his family and friends. And I feel sorry for this tribe because they were forced into this awful situation by this American man and his selfish actions. Hopefully this means these people are left alone now.
