I hated it when I was a kid (and still lived in Portugal) but now I appreciate it not only for its sound but its cultural roots It's not a genre people in Portugal casually listen to on the radio nor do most young people care for it But people who appreciate heritage, culture, history and uniqueness in music are the people that really listen to it Actually this genre "Fado" is actually under some kind of global cultural protection my dad was telling me.
