What was ARTPOP’s MAIN lyrical/visual theme?

We had the simplest explanation for each era

The Fame was about the bright side of fame

The Fame Monster was about its dark side

Born This Way was about being yourself and sexuality acceptance

Joanne was about her aunt and healing her family

We could literally pin point those eras’ theme in one sentence but ARTPOP’s concept seemed too complicated to explain? And isn’t as specific as the other eras?

that's exactly why it flopped lol, because it didn't have a simple meaning

Spoiler

jk:oops:

OT: Tbh i dont really know and to be brutally honest i dont think gags entirely knew either, hence "my ARTPOP could mean anything"...which is why it's an amazing album, because it could be interpreted in so many different ways

✨oh the lights dim while we’re dancing yeah the floor is shaking in this disco heaven✨

sis! her ARTPOP could mean anything

it was Gaga doing whatever she wanted, trying to be innovative and creative and incorporating Art into Pop music

I always thought it was about putting the Warhol back on the soup can ...

like taking what everyone thinks about her (sex, drugs, fashion, dance, abuse) and feeding it back to the public.

She is the soup can, the public/media created the soup can painting, and she just put the painting back onto the soup can.

I truly think this was her idea .. but it took so long and so much happened that even she didn't know what she meant anymore lol.

While I don't think she strictly stuck to it, the intention behind it was to bring art into pop music. The "reverse Warholian expedition". She wanted to see fine art put into the mainstream. I don't think that that as a concept makes total sense (because things regarded as fine art have universal acceptance and are thus part of the general zeitgeist already making them "pop"; but w/e), nor do I think it was executed to the fullest extent of her vision, though I'd argue much of that is because she didn't *quite* know how to execute that in a real tangible way sonically, visually or experientially. Then I also think she was too exhausted and depressed to see it through as a concept and just wanted to "live in the void" as it were and just lay into the adrenalines of the different songs to exorcise her pain.

So there were two distinct currents during ARTPOP, one rigid and the other fluid. Having them operating in tandem is what made things seem muddled.

ARTPOP - That you can combine fine art into pop music and make an artistic statement based on it. That pop is not shallow (no pun intended), but rather, pop music can be fine art!

I do agree that this era was her least successful due to the album not having a simple overall message like her other albums. It is actually her most complex work and its a lot deeper than people give it credit for.

was Joanne really about her aunt? I think her aunt just inspired the album but Joanne was really about Gaga's life, her friends, family(like you said), lovers, and her sexuality.

ARTPOP is about celebration, Gaga said once in an interview that BTW was about accepting yourself and ARTPOP about celebrating yourself so I think BTW and ARTPOP are connected because of that

once you accepted who you are, you can celebrate your life and that's why ARTPOP has EDM/party sounds.
