swakby 4,100
What ruined Witness was Witness itself, it's one of the worst albums I've ever heard.
ryhanna 3,507
Not really, but it definitely didn't help. Katy had so much overexposure and image issues, plus the music was... not the best.

TropicOfCANCER 6,292
It certainly didn’t help, but the music was underwhelming, and Katy was trying to be political in a time when the wound of trumps election was still too new. Plus, it all felt very try hard- very little political substance in the music anyway.
Phoebe Buffay 12,525
The hair and the cringy performances and interviews. A shame because Witness is a good album. Plus the singles were a mess. What sane person even releases Swish Swish as a single when you have songs like Witness, Roulette, Tsunami, Deja Vu, Power..? And she was trying to be political too. So there you have it why Witness underperformed.
Benji 20,113
The Witness era and album were disappointing. I remember when the demo leaked of Witness and I was amazed at the direction Katy appeared to be going in but most of the rest of the album didn’t live up to that. Chained to the Rhythm was cute and quite successful but everything that came after just fell flat. Witness (song) and Roulette deserved better. giskardsb 12,565
I’ll be the first to say that pop is a highly superficial industry but I don’t think hair on its own could cause all that.

That didn't have much success either, and she still had her black hair, and it was her first single in a long time. What happened is that she had been so crazy successful for so long. And, as it happens with all crazy successful artists, people grew tired of her. Just like what happened to Gaga with ARTPOP. Now, the question is: will she get back up? If she does, great for her. If she doesn't, she still had an impressive run in the music industry. 8 hours ago, Poissonche said: Except Gaga was coming off ARTPOP and Cheek to Cheek. Katy was coming off the PRISM era, that had a massively successful tour, massively successful singles (remember how effortless it was for Dark Horse to get to #1?), and where she had performed at the goddamn Super Bowl. Gaga was already considered "dead" and "over" when she released TIHTY. Katy was still one of the dominating pop artists when releasing Rise. Sis, how is Rise (a promo stand alone single) not successful? 1Million+ Pure Sales in US (Platinium Certified) #11 Billboard 100 peak It basically outdid Bon Appetite and Swish Swish (the singles she put out with short hair lol)

GagaUnderYou 4,978
Her hair would have made the era more successful and I think even Katy knows that. Her style is that girly, bubblegum pop, super sexualized image which is what people are used to her being. Some of the songs on Witness have better production than songs off Prism but being seen looking like "Miley Cyrus" was put in front of the actual music. It's sad, but that's the society we live in where image is everything when it comes to selling.

ARTPOP was a good album, but lots of miscommunication and mismanagement happened and it didn't have to opportunity to shine. Applause was the only "successful" song from the album because everything was going as planned in Gaga's camp until the release of the actual album. ARTPOP is an album everyone is now starting to appreciate after taking some time away for it. Hoping to see this vibe again for LG6/Enigma. ARTPOP was a psychedelic experience which showcases different sides of Gaga, it's a fun, irresponsible pop record which truly embodies who Lady Gaga is. TheMiddleGround 3,200
It was the combination of her personality, her bad performances and publicly supporting Hillary Clinton. The album had its moments but missed the Dr.Luke hit formula.
SJAG 1,597
The hair change certainly influenced it since Katy's "brand" was her sex appeal as some of you said and that haircut made her not so good looking (I know she served some amazing looks with the short blond hair, but she undeniably looked way better with long black hair), but the whole era being a mess is not caused by a simple haircut. She's in her thirties and she acted weird in interviews and TV performances (Hello SNL), making dumb faces and noises, she was always so cringy and embarassing (Her using "wig" in every sentence and acting like a "cool kid" was just so annoying) while at the same time she was promoting awareness on society-related problem and politics, you couldn't take her seriously. She was acting "woke", talking about her album, Witness, as being a commentary on social issues and stuff like that, while it turned out to be pretty shallow. Using Bon Appetit as an example. To me that was purely bad. Apart from featuring the homophobic rapper group Migos, the lyrics didn't exactly match what she was stating the message of song was (Sexual empowerment and such), and was just extremely vulgar. BA really played a huge role in Witness underperfoming (I'm not saying it was a FLOP because I would be wrong) That being said, I really liked the promotions for the songs (Like the disco balls for CTTR and the cherry pie recipe for BA) and of course the videos were absolutely amazing (We can all agree she has an iconic videography and some of the best visuals) and the tour was spectacular (Once again, it's undeniable that the production of her performances is great).
