It can't go up if it doesn't go down. Don't just post the positive. 17 hours ago, Doncho said: Mark Ronson and Miley #1 on iTunes WW. Spotify and the label still sack the most money. Lately I've been a bit more optimistic about streaming but like... streaming, specifically Spotify really f*cked over the industry majorly. The fact that Spotify is still operating on a MAJOR loss while sacking the most money... It's a system that is bound to crumble sooner or later. Even with the market for pure sales declining, it's still A LOT more profitable than streaming. Yikes. What the ****? How does future musicians/artist gonna survive if you need 100M streams and ONLY get paid 700 bucks.. luna’s advocate

The songwriter said in the interview she mainly lives off license fees (when people play your song on TV, events etc., you get paid) and has a regular day job in a office cubicle as well even though she writes for very established people (in the German circuit, not interntionally). And that she is extremely dependant on her songs becoming singles. Otherwise she can't pay her bills. She also said she writes at least one song a day and tries to sell it off. I've just read an article published by Rolling Stone Italia and it says that a single stream (Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music...) gives to the artist between 0.006-0.008 dollars. However, Jason Bazinet (researcher for Citigroup) declared that the young artists don't understand the little and absurd details of the music industry and they don't know how the money moves. They will therefore never gain a lot of money, because the system is full of holes. https://www.rollingstone.it/musica/news-musica/come-si-guadagna-dalla-musica-nel-2018/423897/#“Sei”

Nowadays it's really harder than ever to maintain your status within the industry and it's even harder to break through as a newcomer. There are very little artists who are streaming forces that don't struggle with touring (Adele, Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran are the only ones who can actually tour and see sold out venues). It feels like... with every year the stakes get a lot higher when you release a new album. As of recent, people even stopped attending tours if the recent album of the artist flopped (Katy Perry, to some degree Beyoncé & Jay-Z this year). Like.. that never happened before. You could always rely on your back catalogue still pulling people in but less and less people care about it.
ShockPop 7,747
Well that explains why music right now is trash. There's no money to be made from writing a good song, you have to knock out 50 a day to win.

If your album struggles, your tour will not sell as good. Even with Gaga, you can see that her tours reflect the succes of the era. There are exceptions here and there. For example, touring in new places where is demand.
