The Japanese release makes a lot of sense, all movies from the western hemisphere get released there substantially later, due to the different nature of the Japanese market. Japanese people in general wait until there's already a general consensus on a movie and then decide whether they wanna throw their money at it or not. If a film studio really believes in a movies success, they'll delay the Japansese release as much as possible so the movie can collect as many accolades as possible (Example: Frozen being released 6 months after its original release, after Let It Go smashed worldwide and the movie collected two Oscars, it went on to gross $247M alone despite the delayed release). If a studio is sure a movie will be a box office bomb, they're releasing the movie simultaneously. ASIB is somewhat in the middle, meaning that the studio saw potential in the movie but didn't expect the way it would blow up. If they knew, what they know now they would postpone the Japanese release until the Oscars. It's also the same for music in Japan: Full-length music videos generally get released there a month before the actual single drops so that the public can make up their mind on whether they wanna purchase the song or not. Not really true. Bohemian rhapsody will be out in Japan this week. Not saying that they dont have a strategy. If it manages to hold well next weekend, it will be the first 40M+ film to drop sub-35% six weekends in a row since Avatar. ASIB will pass Pretty Woman tomorrow to become the 20th highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, unadjusted. A Star is Born is passing $200M before the Oscar bump even arrives.
