kupo 201
I think he meant disappointment in how it sounded not on what it preached. People were expecting a catchy dance pop song with original Gaga hooks. Most people liked it once it grew on them, but unfortunately some heard it the first time and didn't bother listening a second time I do think it was probably a bit...softer in its overall sound than people were probably expecting. As much as I love it as lead single choice and totally think she did the right thing, it remains one of my least favorite tracks on the album. Most people liked it once it grew on them, but unfortunately some heard it the first time and didn't bother listening a second time I personally loved the song when I first heard it, but I'm just going by my observations. Maybe if it sonically didn't sound similar to Madonna's song and the overall energy of the song was more lighthearted it would have appealed to more. It definitely was not a "bad" choice, just saying I think some other songs would have been a better choice for the debut single. Oh well... This topic has been beaten over and over again like a dead horse. I'm curious if ARTPOP's lead single will be the best the album has to offer (a la Bad Romance) or if they'll save the best for later like they did with TF and BTW. Alejandro/DITD **** on BR It'd be best to release the 2nd best song from the album rather than the best. FUN. needs to move and make room for Maroon 5 tbh :sweep:

Americano 31,061
I never really liked DITD and was super ecstatic when it was skipped as a single tbh. All of my favorite Gaga songs were released from each album. (Paparazzi, Alejandro, and Judas/TEOG)
Arturo 40,746
I never really liked DITD and was super ecstatic when it was skipped as a single tbh. I like it, but it probably would have under performed considering it's not as radio friendly as its 3 predecessors. Also, it would have been slammed for copying Vogue in the bridge and even worse considering it had the same chord progression as Strangelove by Depeche Mode in the beginning
Americano 31,061
I like this remix of Mariah's buzz single. Shouldve been released instead of the original.
kupo 201
TFM was an embarrassment of riches, though. Like, any of those 8 songs would have made a fine single (don't know how well Speechless or Teeth woulda performed, but they're both worthy songs. Hell, I think Teeth probably remains in her top 5). It's probably a good thing in the end that DITD wasn't released as a single, as its obvious Madonna homage would make the BTW/EY controversy even worse. ETA- didn't see, but Arturo beat me to that last comment.
Americano 31,061
I always thought TFM in general was overglamorized, especially the era itself. (Which had plenty of complaints at the time.) Monster isn't a really great song, it's super safe. Telephone is incredibly generic. Teeth is cool, but not single worthy. SHICD is simply bland. Bad Romance was the only song that stuck out as daring for Gaga. DITD was just a preview of BTW, but then BTW took all of that 80s sound to a new level. My opinion is in the minority, I suppose. Ozzy8923 9
Yes, I agree with Arturo52311, it is best to leave the SECOND best song on the album for the lead single and the BEST song on the album as the second single. It will guarantee more longevity and success for a longer period of time. Of course, which songs one considers the best is completely subjective, but, basically, the second single should be better than the lead single because of the reasons stated. I'll give you some examples: - The Fame Era: Just Dance was released as the lead single and performed extremely well and then the second single, Poker Face (which is considered to be a better song than JD) was released and that garnered Gaga even more success and kept her momentum going steadily and made Gaga a HUGE global superstar since PF reached #1 in most major music markets and was a more WW success than JD. Had it been PF first and then JD, I think it would have been a whole different situation. It also kept album sales increasing steadily week after week. - Femme Fatale Era: Releasing HIAM first and then TTWE which was an arguably much larger hit and kept the momentum of the era going. - One of the Boys Era: Releasing IKAG first and then Hot and Cold which was a more successful song in terms of sales and kept Katy's momentum going as well. - Believe Era: Releasing Boyfriend first and then ASAYLM a more commercial song that is more likable to the GP and just garnered him his second top 10 from his album. I don't think I'm somebody that sees the era with rose-colored glasses (overall, I prefer the BTW era), but I've said it before and I'll probably say it again: where BTW is much grander in scope and ambition, I think TFM is more polished and consistent. I actually love Monster, I think RedOne's production is really, really sharp and the song has Gaga's trademark dark aesthetic, but in a way that is more delicious and addictive than she usually is. This probably would have been the best bet for the third single (glad we got Alejandro, though, because we got Alejandro's video!). And I'm actually a huge fan of SHICD. It really nails the sort of dreamy, d--gged feeling that it's going for, and while it's not as iconic or in your face as the rest of the album, I actually think it's a really-well produced song. And I personally prefer DITD to BTW, but obviously it's all a matter of taste. I will say, Gaga's celeb roll call is totally better/more interesting than Madonna's in Vogue. There's an opinion I'd have to be careful about expressing to certain people.

This whole post  Because Monsters will buy any song Gaga puts out as her lead single. So even though quality matters, it being the best song on the album doesn't really matter. As long as it's somewhat commercial and the 2nd single is 100% commercial

I think we can agree that it's good that this is even subject to debate. That means the quality of work is consistent enough that either side can be argued. Some acts can't say the same.
