SJAG 1,597
So, a couple of days ago I finally watched "A Star is Born". The film was released on October 11th in Italy so despite Gaga talking about pasta leftovers and being italian to promote the film, they decided to release in cinemas here a week after the US. I didn't really like the voice they gave Gaga so I'm looking forward to watch it in english too. First of all, the film was BEAUTIFUL. It was amazingly directed and acted, considering it was both Gaga and Bradley debuts. There were some things I would have changed but I'm not here to discuss it. I really enjoyed it after all, and I'm very happy that people are actually recognizing Gaga's singing AND acting talent, plus we're witnessing one of Gaga's career peaks, she's literally everywhere being praised and acclaimed by critics and audience all over the world. But in this thread I'm not making a "A Star is Born" review, or at least not directly. Today I'll talk about a specific song, "Hair Body Face", which in my opinion is EXTREMELY underrated. "Hair Body Face" is part of Ally's discography as a pop star. Since you clearly saw the movie too, I'm not here to explain the plot, we know quite well that once she starts becoming successful, her songs lack of quality. Both "Heal me" and "Why did you do that?", which are performed in the movie (while "HBF" literally plays for 3 seconds) are pretty basic, lyrically and musically speaking. In my opinion they didn't want HM, HBF and WDYDT to sound bad, just simple and "shallow". Gaga explains that too in a couple of interviews. Her first song, "Shallow" is the opposite of what she writes when famous. Despite that, I think "Hair Body Face" is FAR from being shallow. By looking at its lyrics, you can easily agree that the song has a very important meaning, so I'm really disappointed they payed it dust in the film, since I think it sums up the entire plot really well. In the first verse, we know Ally is, secretely, a songwriter (I wrote this song in my head) and is afraid to show her true self, scared of what people (in the music industry I believe, since she's talking to Jack) will think of her (Your friends are in the other room - Heard every cruel thing they said - They're all just tryin' to be cool) in fact we know Ally has been told she's not pretty enough to make it, but she doesn't really care once Jack starts to believe in her and tells her she's beautiful (I'm not mad as long as I am perfect in your eyes). In the chorus we still see an insicure Ally. She wants to quit, but Jack is on her side and helps her by saying she doesn't need people approval otherwise she'll never be successful (Tryin' to leave here - But you won't let me leave - Sayin' that if I care what they think I'll never succeed). But she needs Jack to tell her she's pretty (I won't leave here if you promise to me I got the hair body face). This sentence is very important since we see the two argue when he calls her "F***ing ugly" (Scene 98 - Dialogue) so you see how much she's affected by Jack's opinion on her look and how bad she reacts. In the second verse, Ally is more confident, though conscious of not being the best looking, she knows she has her own charm, thanks to Jack (But don't take me for a fool - Now I know I got my own charm). In this verse she also sings about not being successful at school, we know Gaga herself wasn't really appreciated and often bullied, so I think that even from the perspective of Ally, Gaga still put her personal experiences in the songs (Wasn't the "it" girl at school - No I wasn't queen at the prom). Ally and Gaga are, in fact very similar. Both were critiqued for their look but they ultimately become successfull because of their singing talent (We also know Ally is in her 30s and depressed, she doesn't believe in herself while Gaga dragged her keyboard around New York City and pretended to be her own manager to sing to clubs and events so they are different in some aspects). Both Ally and Gaga make Jack and Bradley fall in love for them singing "La vie en rose", but while Ally and Jack sang Shallow together, Gaga and Bradley sang "Midnight Special" and she stopped while playing her piano when he started singing to tell him "Bradley you have a voice". Jokes aside, what is YOUR opinion on "Hair Body Face"? I love it. Let me know in the comments.

Oriane 21,006
Musically it is. It reminds me of the kind of songs she was doing between her Stefani and Fame eras, when she was working and looking for her sound for The Fame. Gardevoir 9,822
I'm sorry but "Heal Me" basic musically and lyric-wise? Did we hear the same thing? Heal Me has absolutely beautiful and romantic lyrics. Also chorus is everything. Sugar, spice, and everything nice.
