Admin 24,441
Just now, TEANUS said: Everyone complains about K-Pop spilling over into Western culture. Like western music has been spilling into Asia since forever. It’s just the opposite now whats the big deal It isn't exactly the opposite because Kpop isn't really Asian culture, it's just lower quality Western music. It would be really cool if something really cool from Korea or Japan crossed over, but in reality all those BTS songs sound just like really poor imitations of those already generic Justin Bieber songs. BuzzcutSeason 3,307
I think what people complain about when it comes to Kpop isn’t so much the actual content but the huge, annoying fanbases. Like its just so much cringe extraness. That, and the fact there’s no relevance past that group, they aren’t “spilling” into mainstream culture completely. Like BTS may win ‘best social’ at the BBMAs but it’s lowkey just their fans having nothing to do but tweet all day, not devoted fans and then people casually tweeting about them. Make sure you know what you're backing up before you call anyone xenophobic. Big record labels make artists eat JUST an apple for a few months before release so that they look skinny for promo. @Taylor can you expand on this? Where to start... Trainees are recruited by agencies (i.e. labels) and are trained on how to sing, how to dance, foreign languages, how to act when on camera/variety shows. They may go so far as to construct a personality for an "idol", where they essentially have to stay in character at all times. When the label wants to debut a new group or solo artist, they'll pick from their trainees. Some trainees will train for years and years and never be chosen. The chosen few will then sign a 7 year contract (that is what is "normal" anyways). The chosen trainees will then prepare for their debut, working even 20 hours a day hours to record the song, music video, practice the choreography. They'll also have to attend school if they haven't yet graduated, as some idols can debut at as little as 14 years old. They'll sometimes be placed on strict diets that regulate not just food but also water (as drinking water "makes eyes puffy"). For example, IU's diet consists of an apple for breakfast, a sweet potato for lunch and a protein shake for dinner whilst doing rigorous exercise. Korean companies also have almost full control over their artists - they can impose dating bans, they have to follow strict rules. Some (if not most) artists will be given some form of plastic surgery. What else... Debt. Remember how I mentioned trainees will be trained in dance, singing etc? That's not free for them, the company doesn't count it as an expense. The company will turn whatever they've spent on training, food and living arrangements into "trainee debt". The profits from a group's releases will go towards repaying this debt, meaning that unpopular groups may never work the debt off before the label decides to disband the group. All I can think of at the moment... 😅 It's different from label to label, but this is kinda the basics that will apply in most situations 😓

Gaga used to get super skinny and fit before an album cycle. Tea. But, as far as I know, it's even more magnified in the K-Pop world. Like, to ridiculous degrees. I heard somewhere that a bigger K-Pop girl (Hyuna?) was dropped because she was dating another K-Pop boy (also dropped) behind the scenes, and that's apparently not allowed. The music is fun, although incredibly generic. A lot of distaste really does come from xenophobia and straight-up racism (especially in the US, as we are unfortunately an incredibly racist country), while a lot of distaste also comes from that it is easily perceived as very shallow pop music (which is, in a lot of cases, valid). I mean, it doesn't account for the relative unchecked bafoonery that is our Top 40 right now, though. -- On-topic, can somebody remind me of the record for longest #1 for movie soundtracks, this year? I think it was three weeks but I forgot. If ASIB does three, or four, then whew. 3 points in and ready for more

It's like peak pop star Stannage, but magnified. Like, boy band fandom but multiplied to the -nth degree. As somebody who identifies also as Asian, the large scale implications of such shallow fanaticism is also a little freaky and occasionally fetishistic. I'm sure there's a sociological paper written about that somewhere sksksksk. 3 points in and ready for more
