A good manager should be brutally honest and do whatever is best for the artist, and that's what Rez did. So in that sense, I don't think the character is such an asshole. Artists don't always know what's best for them to be successful, that's what managers are for. In the end, whatever Rez does in the film, as brutal as it is, is to try to give Ally a career. Of course there's a money aspect to it, but I really think he does believe in her and thinks she's wasting her talent and potential by staying with Jack. That makes him a very interesting and nuanced antagonist, and I can't completely hate him. And just wanted Jack to back off? He was her husband. You don’t just try to get someone’s spouse to back off.. I think it’s important to take care of an artist’s mental health so they don’t burn out. Like look at Gaga and Bobby, they work because he actually cares about her.
