Gaga on Ellen Thought...

So, having watched the interview with Ellen, firstly I will say how stunning Gaga looked and also how articulate, engaged and kind she came across. She has grown so much and her intelligence is really shining. When she talks about her work, it is like listening to an architect or painter explain their crafts and all their technicalities. It is really admirable and fascinating.

Watching the interview, I find it almost unthinkable how different she now is. This change is not a bad thing... but it's still a thing, you know? And I think it's something quite profound. I don't think it's fair for other monsters to shut-down any conversation of this, either. Like, I'm not coming from a place of negativity at all. I'm coming from the place of a fan who has watched Gaga transition throughout different stages of her career, and how each stage has impacted her.

I think Gaga has always had barriers up in her career - and it's interesting to look at how these barriers have changed. It's as though her fashion was previously her protection, and now it is her words.

When Ellen showed the clip of Gaga from a previous interview with her, you could see and feel how different she was back then. I'm not talking about looks or fashion - I'm talking about her entire character. And I always find it interesting to wonder if Gaga is aware of this. Like, when she watched that interview back, do you think she felt a bit uncomfortable? Or even a bit exposed? Personally, I felt it was quite telling how she went to drink her tea at that very moment. In terms of body language, the mug really enabled her to hide any discomfort or awkwardness.

I find it very interesting when Gaga is faced with her past eras. I remember in Joanne she seemed really quite dismissive of some of her work. Aside from the moment of an embarrassed Gaga brushing off Volantis, she also went on record and said that she has 'never' been so personal in any of her previous albums... which I found quite jarring and contradictory. I sometimes think Gaga might be embarrassed by some of what she has done - which really saddens me.

To be honest, I just found the Ellen interview very illustrative of how much Gaga has changed; especially when we (and she) was faced with a like-for-like comparison on the Ellen show. And whilst I think the change is extremely radical, I am happy for Gaga and very proud of her... but it's very interesting when you really think about the changes in her personality.

I also wonder if Gaga's ability to radically change is why she has been able to act so well. Perhaps she has been 'playing' a lot of different 'acts' throughout her entire career. Perhaps, really, we will never truly know - aside from her dearest values - who Gaga really is.

It's likely true about Joanne being her most personal album but more so because it's sort of stripped down to the essentials of what she's saying, like in TFM she was obviously using different fears for the songs so giving it a theme allowed her to go through personal topics but they were kind of masked like the music version of her fashion at the time, the whole mixing of reality and fantasy that she would mention. And with BTW it probably felt like she was making the album for people rather than about herself for the most part, the messages are bigger than one person you know it feels kind of universal so she was the vessel for spreading those messages. With AP she said she was making hits and music that her mom would listen to in the kitchen so could have been her least personal album but songs like DOPE and Applause balance it out a bit. I have no idea about TF and don't know about embarrassement but we know that she only worked with Wale on that song to work with Ronson so I don't think she likes the song and she doesn't like Money Honey

In my show for the JWT (Louisville) she mentioned how Joanne was deemed her most personal album, but then said that true monsters would know that's debatable. I remember feeling jarred as she MULTIPLE times mentioned how Joanne was her most personal work.

In my opinion, I think it's mostly business than evolution. Gaga in the past had the freedom to be more eccentric in interviews. I think largely she's wanted to distance herself from that; it's why Gaga interviews have been so dry for the past few years.

A Star is Born is widely known to be a serious turn in her career. It's gaining her real acclaim and people are really looking at her as a serious force. I'd be uncomfortable too if I were promoting a movie and the interviewer dug up videos in the past where she was weirder in interviews. Although the clip was in no way bad and Ellen wasn't being malicious, Gaga couldn't have known exactly what happened in that interview because she did SO many in that era.

There is no point on discussing 'who she is'. Gaga's whole career is a piece of art, everything you see and hear is part of it. We only know she is talented, kind and smart... Everything else is just a cloak that she changes with every era. The Gaga we are seeing for ASIB is just as real as Gaga from ARTPOP or the Gaga we'll see in LG9.

I stan the woman that puts together perfectly every piece to sculpt the character she designed. The complexity in Gaga's persona is far more extreme than anything humanity has seen before, that's why she will go down in history as a legend (and will be studied and analysed by experts decades and decades after she's gone)

OP, I agree with everything you said! Thanks for putting my thoughts into words.

It kind of shocked me, seeing the changes in her voice and her face, all the baby fat gone, along with the “free-spirited” attitude. I had to remind myself that it was 7 years ago and she’s been through so much...more than we will ever know.

It was almost kind of insensitive for Ellen to show that clip, but I suppose Gaga could’ve asked her not to and obviously approved it so...I don’t think she’s embarrassed or has regrets, she just doesn’t really like to look back at her past self (as I’m sure most people would agree!), so she was a little uncomfortable and focused on sipping her tea.

^^^ I second this. This is almost solely the reason I love her so much. How extremely private she is. She actually gives the world so much but is also able to protect her heart and her true self - that’s something that really resonates with me (I’m a creative person and I always want to share, but I’m very guarded and have my walls up a lot). It’s kind of the message she was sending with DWUW. She knows really who she is and we can admire her but we’ll never truly know. She’s an enigma ♥️

It’s been a while ride being a Gaga stan. Even though lots of LMs want her to go back to how she used to be, I’m actually pretty happy with where she is now. Because I feel like I’ve also grown up with her and her outlook on life is so different.

Honestly It's something we all go trough. Nobody stays the same, we live and we learn and change with time.

I've seen that change in myself, I care less and less about the small things as time goes on and I care more about the bigger picture of life.

It's not that deep tbh I'm 22 now and if someone shows a video of 12-years-old-me talking I'd be kinda embarrassed too. It's not that I'm ashamed of what I said before, it's just that I'm different now, everybody changes. I dont know how old are you but 10 years from now you may be cringing about your personality today
