After eighteen years and various re-inventions, Big Brother in the United Kingdom is no more, as of this morning.

Big Brother's Twitter account shared the news that the 19th series, launching on Friday night, would be the last.

Channel 5 confirmed Celebrity Big Brother was also ending.

The show first appeared on screens in 2000 and was extremely popular, but viewing figures have dwindled in recent years, despite increasing rises in interest among on-demand platforms amongst 16-34 year olds

Endemol released a statement shortly after Channel 5's announcement to say they were "disappointed not to reach an agreement with Channel 5" over the future of the show.

The production company did hint that it might not be the end of the show entirely as they added "the decision opens up a new chapter and we are excited about future possibilities for Big Brother in the UK".

During the launch of Celebrity Big Brother, Channel 5 controller Ben Frow hinted the franchise would be ending as "the contract runs out at Christmas".

n July, Endemol Shine UK applied to Hertsmere Borough Council to keep the Big Brother house at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, for the next three years.

The house's current permission was due to expire on 30 September, just 16 days after the new series begins.

The council's planning committee approved the application at a meeting on Thursday, after discussing conditions to restrict noise.

The Sun says it won't really end and some channels are already planning on reviving it by early next year (the same source that told us C5 is gonna cancel BB a year ago).

So sad, been on British TV for 21 years and that’s the show that started it all! Yes lately there’s been a lot of Z list young wannabe reality tv stars in the civilian series, but if they took it back to 100% regular public from different backgrounds it would probably be more popular, it’s such an interesting social experiment.

The only half decent series of either incarnation since like the 00s was the ‘David’s Dead’ one, that was an iconic moment in British TV history.

Not the bore worms!

I think the producers have had enough of the scandals. There's just been too many now. One too many times security has to be called because a fight broke out, the racism row, the pregnancy scare and the "woman beater" case recently was just the last straw, what with the careers it could've ruined all because of a false accusation. Its reached a point where it now seems like a highly irresponsible social experiment. People are deliberately picked based on how unstable they are, it seems, making for very uncomfortable viewing and putting other housemates in danger. It's a madness that shouldn't be allowed to continue anymore. Considering all the focus that the media is putting on mental health of late (it seems like every show makes a shout-out to it now), it's a massive contradiction to allow the likes of Big Brother - which seems to purposely place mentally unwell people in situations where they'll be triggered - to continue.

Bring back Celebrity Big Brother only. :rip:

The January season was always the better one out of the two that happened yearly!
