Andrea B 16,761
A lot of people think that this will happen to Mexico since Lopez Obrador won the presidency, I don't think Mexico will become the ''new Venezuela'' but idk, anything can happen. I don't want to live in a country like Venezuela(no offense) I know Mexico is not the greatest country but we're better than Venezuela right now. I'm sorry for what's happening to them, I hope it gets better.

I just meant that it's possible to have a lot of oil and not mismanage the resources and run nation to the ground think Canada is the only Nation in the top 10 highest oil reserves (were #3) that isn't a hell hole to live in (I think the US is close to top 10 now with the upgrade in "proven reserves" from shale tho) Something about the culture there - perhaps bilingualism and the strong winters - make it a very well organised and respectful society. Not being overpopulated also helps. People appreciate nature more. Would love to visit one day Also kind of stunned Canada and the US have THAT much oil and gas

Many gas shale basins dont have complete enough surveys yet for an official figure. Once added in a few years the numbers could be massive In Canada we have a huge nat gas shale basins that's pretty huge that also does not count in the figures yet. In addition they discovered 2 basins in the north west territories mainly with crude oil that are also not in the official figures yet New technologies are being developed to get better recovery rates in the oil sands too. Once completed and proven to work, Canada may jump to #1 most oil from #3 right now The US could be #2 most natural gas after China. Tho China's geological regions with gas are challanging to drill and as a result they may never produce what the US has the potential to produce As for nature, given most people live in cities I don't know that the average Canadian necessarily appreciates it more As massive as our land is, 90% of our population is all concentrated within 160 miles of the US border. Most of the empty land has no one there to appreciate it

A low population for your land doesn't help much in that aspect of everyone still concentrates in specific regions and don't spread out into the empty land But yeah it is refreshing. I live on the very outskirts of the Toronto area (in a suburb city of 600,000) like very outskirts. My suburb city is the last major city for a big distance traveling north... And the boundaries from my city territory are like 150 feet from my house and then it's country land mostly from there! I'm literally living on the edge

Whether it works or not depends on the level of competence the Government has Socialism tends to also have a system with higher taxes and more government spending overall. That means a smaller piece of the economic pie stays in the private sector and more of the Nation's wealth is transferred to the government for them to decide how to spend it If a government makes wise use of the funds and creates great infrastructure, educated productive workforce social investments that pay for themselves (like child care which helps female labor force participation rate) then despite higher taxes (within reason of course) a socialism Nation can flourish like some of the Scandinavian Countries for example When a government is incompetent or corrupt and misuses the tax dollars, then wealth is being sucked away from consumers and companies for nothing, not enough good investment are made and the higher taxes from socialism end up not paying for themselves and became an economic burden. In these cases the government is better off being more Capitalist and letting private sector do its thing than to take more wealth from them and mismanagement the money In the case of Venezuela, there has been extreme mismanagement. + Venezuela stopped caring about its land, Venezuela started expending on other countries. The zone is bad overall with a few “friendly” countries. The power seduced Maduro and he is now, just another dictator. The govt and the opposition destroyed the country as well, in every instance where there was a chance of a change of govt the opposition asked the people to stay home. Venezuela needs new politicians, every one of them is incompetent. The price of the dollar is ruining Venezuela, the govt buys dollars for pennys and inside of the country the dollars are valued in millions. another shot before we kiss the other side

You’re definitely gonna regret it terribly with the conditions your country is diving into. I know that’s it’s shitty and difficult but when you achieve your goal it’s going to be much much better.
