Is Original Song win really a lock?

Almost every single person has told me that they l̶i̶k̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶y̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶I ̶s̶o̶u̶n̶d̶e̶d̶ b̶u̶t̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶y̶ ̶d̶i̶d̶n̶'̶t̶ ̶l̶i̶k̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶a̶y̶ ̶I̶ ̶l̶o̶o̶k̶e̶d̶  are expecting an Original Song Oscar

but the thing is Warner is likely to submit two songs for Best Original Song consideration, and those would most likely be Shallow and I'll Never Love Again.

In 2007 and 2008, Dreamgirls and Enchanted had three songs nominated under Best Original Song, but lost all of them due to a split of votes. After those consecutive defeats, the Academy imposed a rule that only two songs from the same film can be nominated for that category.

However, it's still possible to split votes in that instance. Though La La Land had two songs nominated and won nevertheless, it's still a possibility ASIB has to look out for. Also many regarded City of Stars much superior to Audition (The Fools Who Dream) since City of Stars was repeatedly played in the film and was the main song promoted.

In ASIB's case, Shallow is played three times in the film and is even featured in the trailer. However, some critics thought I'll Never Love Again was the musical climax of the movie and said that it was very blatantly an Oscar material.

Both songs are so strong on its own we wouldn't know which song will stand out, which means the split is likely even greater than that which happened in La La Land.

Hmm, I think a split vote would be the one factor working most against ASIB for an Original Song win, as opposed to other nominated songs themselves, tbh. I hope they take that into heavy consideration.

FYI the first Mary Poppins gave Julie Andrews her Oscars on her very first leading role! So MP can be a serious contender.

i think that the Original Song is the only "safe bet" from all the potential nominations. so, let's light our Alejandro candles and pray.

 

from what I've read Never Love Again seems to be THAT song and if City of Stars can win it (love the song, but nothing remarkable about it), then NLA can win as well.

I haven't seen the movie yet but someone who has seen it confirmed it's played three times in the film.
