ASIB given me a new appreciation for The Cure

There may be minor spoilers ahead - but nothing I don't think has been discussed by the cast anyway. Still reader beware.

So when Gaga performed The Cure at Coachella and released it, I'll be honest - it wasn't really my jam. It just didn't feel like a Lady Gaga song and it seemed like she was trying to jump on a trend. It was like "Cool, new music, who am I to complain?" but I didn't really listen to it.

I didn't think it was for ASIB at first because, even though the lyrics could fit, I didn't see ASIB going that direction musically. When we learned about Heal Me and all that it obviously seemed like it was an ASIB reject (Although - honestly I think they could have still released it for the film and I'm now sad they didn't).

At this point I think it's clear that, beyond a doubt, it was written for ASIB and with the new details relating to Ally kind of "selling out" or being directed to a pop sound - I now appreciate the song a lot more. While before I was judging it as a Gaga song, I see it now as an Ally song.

When I listen to The Cure now I hear the story of Ally, this rising star, whose 'true love' is an alcoholic who is very sick, (passing out and falling asleep in her arms) desperately wanting to save him and cure him. I see this young woman at the start of her career being pushed into this trendy sound and maintaining her voice by writing songs and lyrics that are obviously true to life. I no longer hear it as a cheap 'trend hopping', 'generic' song by an established, pioneer of pop music. It now sounds more like the sound of a young artist writing an emotional pop-ballad that has depth, within the confines of what her label and manager expect of her.

Like how Gaga keeps saying that, in her career, she would put her own twist on what the label would tell her to do in order to keep some control and integrity - with 'The Cure' I hear a young rising artist who is writing, and putting soul, into what would otherwise be a generic song her label wants from her. Now I actually love The Cure and can't stop listening, the story behind the song has given it a weight it didn't have for me before... The song is telling a beautiful story, and the lyrics as well as the "generic", "trend-hopping" production are all elements that help to tell that story.

Like... The production, at first, seemed so basic and like a shameless attempt at a hit because I was judging it as a Gaga song. In the context of Ally's character development though, it's different. The lyrics are telling the tragic story of Ally and Jackson's relationship and Jackson's alcoholism (her personal struggles) - the production tells the story of a young artist trying to maintain integrity despite the pressures from 'fame' and her label (her professional/artistic struggles). It's kind of this genius way to tell the story.

It kind of hypes me up for the movie AND the soundtrack even more! But until it's released here I'll be watching the trailers and listening to The Cure to satisfy me while I wait!

Fr?

you weren’t feeling the songs depth when people were saying it was about Sonja?

:oprah:

No, because

#1 I never bought the idea it was about Sonja - it would seem insensitive and icky to sing about curing and fixing terminal cancer with love - it always seemed to be about a lover battling mental demons.

#2 The production didn't tell an interesting story under that context... Like it was just trying to hop on the 'tropical house' trend.

Great points.

"The Cure" is a sweet and sugary song, nothing wrong with that, but I don't tend to associate it with Gaga just because there's no... attitude or humor or subversive quality to it. It's all surface. Again, there's nothing wrong with that, but it does seem like a track that Ally would have done once she blew up.
