There are more contenders than Glenn Close.

Olivia Colman (The Favourites), Viola Davis (Widows), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Carey Mulligan (Wildlife), Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Felicity Jones (On The Basis Of Sex), Claire Foy (The First Man), are some names named along side Lady Gaga and Glenn Close for the Best Actress In A Leading Role race.

and as the article writes; A lot can still happen between now and the 91st Oscars on Feb. 24

Oh, I'm aware of everyone else in the field.... Like Glenn Close has been THE favourite for a while... It seemed like she was going to take it.

Viola's name was thrown around as a potential contender, all the other names have been mentioned for noms - but Glenn has been the favourite and remains the favourite....

I still think Glenn will win, like I said, I just don't think it's impossible for Gaga to win at this point - and before I had written her off.

I don't think you can look at it that way, since most actors/actresses do a few movies, with smaller roles, before they get the bigger roles and get noticed by the Academy. Gaga has no real movie career before ASIB.

How dare you forgetting her appearance in Sin City 2 and Machete 2, those are small roles too :triggered:

I do think Glenn is the upperhand at this point. However there is a possibility that Gaga completely blows our mind away and that she is actually far better than she seems in the trailer. Who knows what could happen?

I do think everything's possible right now. The movie is being surprisingly well received, and if it's as successful commercially Gaga might have her chances increased. But again, everything's possible, and this year Glenn Close will probably be nominated (she hasn't win yet and it's about time).

I don't think the oscars are really sensitieve for the 'it's time' argument tho. Look at how long it took Dicaprio to win his oscar.  It all depends on how good a performance is.

Oh 100% her performance is flawless and the academy, I think, is keen to award her not only for this movie but her entire career. She is still my frontrunner by a good while.

What might hurt her though is that it's not going to be a huge film. ASIB is going to outgross The Wife in it's first week alone - which means voters are more likely to have seen Gaga's performance then Glenn's. She is the critical darling so far - but not all the voters watch all the movies nominated or all the performances nominated.

I think Gaga's acting looks great so far, especially from the nose scene... I was skeptical but she impressed me.

I don't even take in consideration Gaga winning best actress at the Oscars. If she manages to be nominated there it'll already be a HUGE win for her. It's been DECADES since the last female pop star did this from what I've heard.

Y'all talking about winning she wasn't even nominated yet. A nomination is more than enough, it just proves that she is multitalented and should be taken seriously by film people and hopefully that can lead to a best actress win one day. Let's just hope she can get at least best original this year that's the best scenario for me: acting nom + song win.

Isn't there a rule that voters must watch all nominated performances before casting a vote?
