Miaou 39,013
In my 12 years of covering the Toronto International Film Festival, I have seen a lot of movies go over huge north of the border — Juno, Slumdog Millionaire, Silver Linings Playbook and the list goes on — but I have never seen a film evoke the sort of response that the North American premiere of A Star Is Born did on Sunday night at the Elgin Theatre. This fourth incarnation of the classic showbiz heartbreaker — directed by and starring Bradley Cooper opposite Lady Gaga, aka Stefani Germanotta — evoked applause after several musical numbers featured in the film, a standing ovation after the closing credits and another standing ovation in the middle of the post-screening Q&A in recognition of a compliment paid to its leading lady. That just doesn't happen. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/a-star-is-born-becomes-major-oscar-contender-at-toronto-debut-1141596 I CAN’T I CAN’T I CAN’T

Adakam 2
Question, is it common for actors/actresses to get an oscar on their first movie ever?
Stef 61,598
The academy could literally get on twitter right now and say “This film is getting Oscar noms” and I sTILL wouldn’t believe it until the day after the Oscar ceremony itself because as a film lover I have been mislead by hype too many times too damn long now Signature loading… 👹🖤

It isn't common, but it's more common for it to happen for an actress than an actor. Audrey Hepburn is one example

Not so much on leading role, more on supporting role. But those who did instantly becoming a legend; Julie Andrews. She won on her debut leading role on Mary Poppins, which is also a musical. I don't think you can look at it that way, since most actors/actresses do a few movies, with smaller roles, before they get the bigger roles and get noticed by the Academy. Gaga has no real movie career before ASIB. The real question here is, I think, how likely is for a known pop singer star to win an Oscar for her first movie ever Let's look at Cher: she was also a huge pop star and very well received as an actress. But before winning the Oscar, she starred in Mask and Silkwood, both as well received as ASIB, and she didn't win. I do think everything's possible right now. The movie is being surprisingly well received, and if it's as successful commercially Gaga might have her chances increased. But again, everything's possible, and this year Glenn Close will probably be nominated (she hasn't win yet and it's about time).

Not common, but some have done it. Barbra Streisand is one example.
Bebe 17,094
I'll be honest even after the Venice Film Festival and the acclaim it garnered I thought "Gaga has a good chance for a Best Actress nomination - but it's impossible she will win. Glenn Close is going to take it, no doubt." I still think Glenn Close will take home the win - but there are doubts creeping... Like, if anyone was to beat Glenn - I think it would be Gaga

Olivia Colman (The Favourites), Viola Davis (Widows), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Carey Mulligan (Wildlife), Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Felicity Jones (On The Basis Of Sex), Claire Foy (The First Man), are some names named along side Lady Gaga and Glenn Close for the Best Actress In A Leading Role race. and as the article writes; A lot can still happen between now and the 91st Oscars on Feb. 24 (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ✧*:・゚ dancin' until i'm dead (*´艸`*) ♡♡♡
