apparently the reason they didn't allow three songs to be nominated is because on both occasions when this happened, all songs lost to some other film, which is probably due to the votes being split too much.

Now I'm starting to wonder if it's a good thing for A Star Is Born to get two nominations. Both songs are so strong we don't even know which one they will vote for.

If Gaga wins an Oscar for this movie, It will be for Original Song. A nom for Best Actress would be incredible though!

Yeah it also happened to Dreamgirls and because of these defeats they changed the rule to only two songs being nominated at most.

they (the academy) restricted to 2 the maximum number of songs of a single movie, because films with more than 2 had votes severelly splitted
