Some people are saying Glenn gave a career-best performance, which I think is hard for Gaga to top, based on the teasers and trailers I have seen. Also The Wife didn't receive that bad, it has an 86% score on RT and 77 on Metacritic, which is good enough for a movie to be considered good.

I need to watch A Star Is Born in full before I can tell if Gaga is winning material.

I mean, I don't think Gaga is going to WIN Best Actress. I think, as it stands, her chances of getting nominated are good. I can see her getting nominated for it and then winning Best Song. But even that is beyond admirable!

From what I have read/heard about The Wife, which granted isn't a TON, most of the positive notices are for the performances, not necessarily for the film itself. Essentially that the movie is fine, serviceable, but it's the performances that make it anything worth talking about. There is a lot of "She deserves this FINALLY" sentiment that could help propel her to a win. And that's valid, and honestly she kind of deserves it? That she hasn't won before is pretty criminal given her career. She is certainly the frontrunner, and there's a good chance it stays that way, but at the end of the day, I think they will do whatever they need to do to get Glenn an Oscar.

Do you guys think Bohemian Rhapsody could kill ASIB's hype?

Though it has a lot working for it (hype, Queen fans, people being familiar already with the songs, Rami Malek, etc.) it also has a LOT working against it (troubled production, Bryan Singer involvement, the film apparently ignoring gay stuff and AIDS stuff), so... it could go either way.

At the end of the day, ASIB and BR seem like very very different films, so I think they can probably co-exist just fine. My bet is BH won't receive the unanimous critical acclaim ASIB has tho.

IMO pushing Glenn to supporting actress could backfire and invite major backlash since the film almost completely relies on her story and performance. If they want to do this 'category fraud', i dont think it would be for Close but for the co-lead Pryce in supporting actor, who was really good too from what i heard. I think if Julianne Moore could survive through the awards season for an okay film and won every major award carrying that overdue narrative, then Glenn Close will be okay too.

I agree! And I think that's probably what will happen. I'm just saying I've heard the theory floated, just like a million other theories so far. Running her in Supporting would be pretty clear category fraud (not that that stops studios from doing it), and plus, like I said, currently Supporting is shaping up to be more competitive, so it would be a bad call to do it anyway.

Gaga's a pop star turned actress in her debut film role, Glenn's overdue but her movie only did decent, Stone won 2 years ago and isn't monumental enough in the movie to warrant a second win, McCarthy has the ghost of Happytime Murders haunting her, Kidman's getting career-best reviews but the movie isn't amazing, Colman and Weisz would fare much better in Supporting, Davis is getting raves as always but the movie is a thriller.

Upcoming award season is going to a MESS :excited2:

This is the same Toronto TV guy who said ASIB changed his life yesterday. He seems to be such a wonderful daddy :flutter: (ok he's straight tho)

And Gaga's "Say hi to my dad for me" makes my eyes watery.:diane:

Dreams of you and me are in the dirt.

The story is probably Sonja's departure

My favorite thing about this award season is that nothing has a flawless narrative so far.

Gaga's a pop star turned actress in her debut film role, Glenn's overdue but her movie only did decent, Stone won 2 years ago and isn't monumental enough in the movie to warrant a second win, McCarthy has the ghosts of Happytime Murders trailing her, Kidman's getting career-best reviews but the movie isn't amazing, Colman and Weisz would fare much better in Supporting, Davis is getting raves as always but the movie is a thriller.

In terms of Best Picture, ASIB is a remake of a remake of a remake, Roma is a black and white foreign film, The Favourite is a weird artsy lesbian period comedy, First Man seems underwhelming after the La La Land elephant, BlacKkKlansman may have premiered too early etc. etc.

At this point I could honestly see Beale Street getting it.

Upcoming award season is going to a MESS :excited2:

It's nice to have a field where anything seems possible! Hopefully a lot of these films will get their shine and be seen by a lot of people.

It also helps in terms of backlash/awards season exhaustion to not have a single film feel "anointed" or predestined to win a la La La Land or w/e.

Yeah. I still get chills thinking about the scene where she had to perform a song for missed one while in real life she really lost her best friend exactly the day when it was filmed
