Not a big deal that it dropped to 90. With so few reviews counted, it will continue to fluctuate for awhile.

(Hope it's okay I'm using this as a catch all ASIB thread lol)

Looks like Natalie Portman is coming y'all. Vox Lux just opened with 92 (with 7 reviews) on metacritic.

Sia also wrote songs for it (Natalie is a Bowie/Gaga-esque pop star in the movie) so it looks like it's going to be a strong competitor Original Song as well.

This trailer just came up in my suggested and it made me HELLA MAD like it came out of nowhere?!?!

However after research I'm a bit more calm. The concept might seem like an ASIB competitor BUT apparently it's a politically driven, super left-of-center story and if Natalie Portman's repertoire teaches us anything, is that she does a lot of weird sh*t. The part that annoys me most is that Sia wrote for it, because people say her songwriting ability/voice is filling the Gaga-shaped hole in the music industry right now...which automatically pits Vox Lux against ASIB :interestinga: Sia is great in her own way but tbh, those songs she wrote for the Annie remake were terrible.

ASIB seems much more appealing on a grand scale, like those "they don't make them anymore" movies of the 1950s and I'm sure will be enjoyed for generations to come. If anything, I'm expecting it to be slept on (despite the fact that some hype is building up), like The Greatest Showman.

Gahh, I should stop reading all these reviews and comparisons because let's be real, the Oscars are unreliable AF. The weirdest sh*t always wins and most of the nominated movies are overrated. I can't remember a film in the last few years that truly deserved the Oscar compared to the other nominees in its category.

I think for now I'll just stay hopeful for Bradley winning something, because I've been watching previous Oscars and he is ALWAYS slept on or has tough competition in his categories. I really feel like 2019 is his year. I'm going to lower my hype for Gaga for now, I'll just be happy to see her attend and slay the red carpet like usual (hopefully walk with Bradley again because they are red carpet magic :flutter:)

Really? Omg maybe I just am not up to date on RT standards but given how this movie was treated on here a year ago I was thinking anything above 75 is phenomenal :air: and I still do :sharon:

It is. The previous version is like 30%. There are plenty of amazing movies that are barely 50%. The fact that this is above 90% really is phenomenal, especially considering how many reasons there are for the media to hate it (remake, first-time director, first time actress, pop star acting, etc).

Judging from how many "Top Critics" gave à positive review, one thing is sure for me: the movie doesn't suck.

i would have watched it several times even if it was the case (I don't know how many times I watched Madonna's body of evidence, and God knows how horrrible that movie is) but it is a pleasant surprise to see that Gaga managed to debut in a leading role in a movie that has been appreciated by almost everybody.

Please note that critics HATE to watch movies in festivals (all my friends that work in the business told me that watching at least 3 movies a day, at 9am even if it is an horror movie, and have to write about it in one hour because otherwise you don't have the time... that could be a nightmare), and if a movie is mediocre, they attack it as it is an insult to the history of art.

So, that is really something to be proud of, as a fan :)

i've read almost 50 reviews and all agree that its a good movie. However, lots of critics agree that there is some sort of pacing issue after first 30 minute. They agree that everything is good until the villain the manager comes into screen. Its really good until Bradley and Gaga meet and they fall in love etc.

and thats what i was worrying about. That they wont be focusing on villain and storytelling, pacing just Gaga's developing as a star, getting Grammy. Hope im wrong. but i already saw lots of reviews about it... some of them even say Gaga's acting is amazing but that part of the story ruins the story. Its about script and director i guess. So we cant blame Gaga.

nobody is saying it "ruins" the story though, just that it maybe doesn't quite match the brilliance of the first 1/2 which culminates with Ally's performance of Shallow.   Given we know how Gaga can take a song to ridiculous heights and goosebump inducing vocals, it's not surprising she is able to take the scene to a climax the movie never quite hits again.

Sia might have written for it but Natalie is the one singing. Gaga's voice> Natalie's voice. Plus ASIB has the an edge over other musicals because all the singing is live. :vegas:
