Will Melanie Martinez's comeback be successful?

Hi Monsters, I'm here today to ask your opinion on Melanie Martinez.

Being a new member of Gaga Daily, I don't know if there is a thread like this already, and I know this may seem very random, but Melanie has been active on social networks lately and we know she has been working on her album for quite a long time now. A new single may be released sooner or later, and my question today is "Is the Melanie/Timothy drama going to negatively influence the success of her new album?".

If you don't know what I'm talking about, then keep on reading. But first, let's introduce Melanie Martinez to those who doesn't know her.

Melanie Martinez is an American singer. She was born on April 28, 1995 in Astoria, Queens, and raised in Baldwin, New York. She took part of television singing show The Voice in Adam Levine's team. She then signed to Atlantic Records and released her EP "Dollhouse" and, later on, her first album titled "Cry Baby" in 2015.

Let's talk about her album in her own word. First of all, "Cry Baby" is a character Melanie Martinez created, inspired to her childhood. Melanie describes her music as "very dark and honest". In fact, despite the childhood-related imagery, Melanie sings about very dark topics. In her own word, she tells "very real and uncomfortable stories and sugarcoat them with childish words and haunting melodies".

What does she say about her sound? Well, If she had her own genre, she says, "it would be called heavy-child", which means "Heavy hip hop/trap inspired beats with creepy nostalgic childlike sounds such as baby pianos, music boxes, and toys".

While dressing as a 50s doll, Melanie Martinez talks about love, lust, self-esteem, death, alcoholism, drugs and insanity in her album. It features 13 songs (3 more on the Deluxe version), which tells the story of  Cry Baby and her feelings. Her family, Johnny, Alphabet Boy and the Big Bad Wolf are primary chatacters in her songs and videos.

I personally love Melanie Martinez, she has an unique style and her character is very interesting, being creepy and cute at the same time. She's a true artist in my opinion. She can sing and play instruments, she writes her songs and directs her videos.

She's has been often accused of being too superficial on some strong themes she talked about in her album, but I think she did a great job narrating the story. My favourite song in the album is Melanie's "most challenging song to write", Mrs. Potato Head.

The message and the writing is amazing, and it happens to be her favourite too.

But now let's discuss the question opening this thread. So, for those who has been living under a rock, Almost a year ago, on December 2017, Melanie Martinez was accused by her friend Timothy Heller of sexually assault and rape. She shared the story via Twitter, claiming Melanie got her high and then raped her with a sex toy, performed oral sex on her and touched her repeatedly without consent. Read the full story here:

Melanie Martinez response was fast, but not very efficient. "I am horrified and saddened by the statements and story told tonight by Timothy Heller", she writes.

Melanie Martinez fans were fast to point out the similarities between the two artists. In fact, Timothy and Melanie shared, other than a very similar look, the passion for making music, which worked out for Melanie only, becoming the only one successful. People were suspicious of the fact that the whole drama happened on Twitter only, never in court.

Could envy be the reason of the allegations? That's pretty much what Melanie confirmed days later. In fact, Melanie released a song on SoundCloud titled "Piggyback", in which she tells her side of the story, calling Timothy a liar, saying that she was taking advantage of her fame, despite her being supportive and loving to her friend.

What do you think of the whole situation? Do you think that the allegations will affect Melanie comeback? In which way?

I mean, a lot of fans left her, it's been quite a long time since the release of cry baby, cry baby was such a slow-burner that charted for a long time despite never having any hit singles, the music videos all got a pretty good amount of views etc. There's a lot speaking against a successful follow-up. Charting wise I'd kind of compare this to Lana Del Rey having to follow up on Born to die. The album we got was great but obv. it wasnt nearly as big commercially as born to die and I think the same will happen here but on a smaller scale.

Obviously she's gonna get backlash and everything will be scrutinized no matter what.

I'm personally looking forward to it and hope it's coming soon. I've been waiting for a long long time...

i don't see it tbh. i absolutely loved crybaby and the concept, but if she continues it for another album i don't see her being successful as before (the rape allegations don't help also)

I have no idea. Their controversy is really hard to comprehend, and as a fan of Melanie, I would feel really bad if ever that comes out false. I still wonder why it wasn't brought to court, and just on Twitter, like what.

I re-listened to her album, Crybaby, just yesterday and I'm so amazed and marveled by the concept and the songwriting and the production of the LP. It was reported that she would release a whole film for the second album, and I can't put in words how much I love the visuals on the first one.

I think it will harm her definitely, but the majority of people seem to have decided that Timothy's accusations don't seem completely realistic. Another unfortunate fact is that these kinds of things tend to blow over. People get tired of caring and just move on to the next celeb drama and forget about it, or forgive them, even if it's proven true. People miss the music and art and come back to the artists.

I for one am actually really excited for the film. She's been working really hard on it, and that girl is a real creative force. Hugely creative. I can't wait to see what she pulls out with a higher budget! And you know she wrote the music, co-produced the music, wrote the film, is directing it, designed outfits and makeup herself, and will co-edit it! The worlds she creates are so beautifully done, and the film is looking to get even darker than the Crybaby album!

Also, have you seen her insta stories lately? The girl has learned to dance!

She did a Q&A on insta a while ago. I've forgotten exactly what she said, but it was something along the lines of she's designing costumes and makeup now, they're going to start filming soon, and she's looking to have it out later this year. I hope so!

I'm still not sure about it. It was way too much for being just an "act of attention seeking", but the fact that there wasn't a legal process, but everything started and finished on Twitter really makes her version questionable. So I kinda agree with you. I want the allegations to be wrong so bad. Melanie is a very creative and talented artist, I would lose all the respect I have for her if the story turned out to be true.
