I hope the kids responsible are charged

They're kids... They don't know the impact of their words - and research shows that kids this age are constantly exploring boundaries, they play out the best friends thing and then they act cruelly and decide to shun and gang up on the previous friend for no seemingly good reason. They are learning how to socialise, they are learning relationships and they also often have empathy blind spots.

What happened is clearly a tragedy - but these 9 year olds shouldn't be charged and locked away... That just doesn't help anybody and it doesn't help with prevention. What we need are programs in school that teach students about differences and diversity and about how diversity is a good thing. We the creation of programs that help foster a more inclusive environment for LGBTIQ students and their families.

We need stronger resources when it comes to providing guidelines for schools on how to deal with bulling. Schools should have multiple avenues for reporting bullying that don’t stigmatise children.

I also think the KiVa program is a brilliant program that needs to be trailed and implemented in more countries - In KiVa primary schools, there was a reduction of 52% in victimization and a reduction of 55% in bullying others. In KiVa secondary schools, there was a reduction of 6% in victimization and a reduction of 40% in bullying others. A remarkable 98% of victims involved in discussions with the schools' KiVa teams felt that their situation improved.(http://www.kivaprogram.net/program)

The parents need to be charged + the children to be taken away from them to get proper mental healthcare so they don't become monsters in the future though. Telling a little child to kill himself for being gay is, clearly, a behaviour that's a result of a disfunctional caressing job from the parents and the school

I understand the outrage, I just don't see how that solution helps anyone either though. It just puts the children through more trauma that they would likely blame themselves for. They don't understand the impact of the words they say, they are exploring social dynamics, but one clear misstep and their classmate is dead and they've been ripped apart from their parents...

It's also easy to pin the blame on parents, but they aren't the only ones influencing those children. Siblings, cousins, other family members, peers, friends, youtube, t.v... It's hard to prove the parents are solely to blame. I certainly wouldn't pin blame for any misdeeds I did as a child on my mother. Having worked with children - they can occasionally say things and act in ways that are uncharacteristic and often baffling. It's just as plausible that a kid heard similar things from an older child at the school, decided to try out and mimic that behaviour and convinced other friends and peers to 'play along'.

I think involving parents and working with parents on the issue of bullying is hugely important, but we also shouldn't jump to such drastic actions without fully understanding how this situation came about and what the consequences of that action would be.

Of course there should be a full analysis of the situation done by experts but the consequence of these acts was tremendously dramatic. Whether you believe it or not, the influence of the direct family nucleus in the years prior to adolescence is key and kids acting so aberrantly is a clear sign of not being properly taken care of. If there was a proper foster home system I wouldn't see the idea of moving the kids to a healthier environment (at least for a few years) as too drastic given the case, but the foster system is a ****ed up place so yeah

The influence of the immediate family is obviously hugely influential - I wouldn't try to deny that - but it's not the only source of influence for children. Yes the consequences were tremendously dramatic, very clearly, there is a dead 9 year old.  I just think the focus needs to be on prevention. I'm not really for criminally charging children who don't really understand the consequences of their words and actions or parents who don't have full control of the acts of their child.

Displacing a child from their home is always a drastic action - sometimes it's necessary, I don't see this as a necessary action in this case.

Me neither. I don't see the kids as direct culprits as they're nine years old.

Determining if it's a necessary action or not is the social services job, not ours. I've seen children taken away from their houses for way less (new born children taken away from their mothers just for then having a past record with drugs despite being clean now, children taken away from their families for some time for being obese and not having a healthy diet, etc)

RIP to the little innocent boy.

But this is the crappiest thing I've yet to come across on this site.

The school needs to be shut down, to fire all the teaching crew, this school don't know how to deal with bullies.. the blood is on their hands..

And those kids are mirrors of their parents, they should get punished too.

RIP little angel.

Ur making a lot of assumptions in this paragraph. This is a horrific tragedy but u can't judge every teacher in the school for the failure of his teacher or perhaps even the principal and administration.

Also this happened over a 4 day period and u Arent always aware of things going on right away

Also u can't be certain these bully kids "mirror their parents". I've met lots of kids who do not represent their parents. It's also why some kids have a sibling that's nothing like them

Not to sound disrespectful, I'm literally just wondering, but how do you know if you're gay before puberty kicks in?

My first spells of attraction began when I was 6 :neyde:
