Lemonade is one of the best albums in a while, that's why it has a great MC score

I wouldn’t say all those albums are urban because they are all very diverse. Look at Lemonade it has some rock and country vibes and piano ballads as well. ANTi has jazzy vibes and a lot of sweet ballads in between the “hip hop/urban” sound

Metacritic doesn't even reflect quality.

Divide by Ed Sheeran is a Grammy winning album and it only has a 62 Metacritic score, Joanne has 67, Kesha's Rainbow has 81.

Lemonade by Beyonce has a 92 Metacritic score when Adele's 25 has a 75 score. However the album with the lower score won Album of the Year.

There are a lot of great albums with low Metacritic scores because they take into account the artists' past albums' performance to determine whether or not they have met their expectations. Huge artists like Gaga usually have the public set very high expectations against her whereas Selena Gomez delivered a mediocre album like Revival and got approximately the same score as Adele did (74 for Selena, 75 for Adele).

At this point it's not about the music anymore.

I disagree with everything you wrote :saladga:

Grammys do NOT indicate quality for years. They indicate commercial success, that's all. Having a good metacritic means dozens of people from different places, who are often specialized in music, agree with your artistic vision.

And I don't think critics have high expectations with Gaga. They underestimate her all the time and she's never got an album above 80 :saladga:

Also in my opinion:

Rainbow = Joanne > Divide

Lemonade > 25

Every award show takes into account popularity to some extent, however that's not their sole benchmark for awarding music. I genuinely think they award quality music in the way they deem fit. They might not be perfect, it's a system run by humans after all, and humans are imperfect, but they strive to do the best. And they have a good extent of credibility, more so than Metacritic. In fact a lot of talented musicians have been recognised by the Grammys in some way, and those which I don't think deserve Grammys have not, for example artists like Selena Gomez, Kesha (pre-Rainbow), Justin Bieber (pre-Purpose) have not been nominated for any Grammys before and it shows that they know what to award and what not to.

Metacritic has been criticised in some respects.

Wikipedia: "When a reviewer gives a rating of "A", Metacritic assigns it a value of 100, and for "F" a value of zero; some think a score of 50 would be more appropriate."

How can you give an album a 100 score or a 0 score? Metacritic is really extreme in assigning their scores, one low score would significantly lower down your total score when in fact a 'mixed' review might be more appropriate. Also Metacritic seems to take into account users' scores when most of these are either 10 or 0. Very rarely do people give mixed opinions, the fans give the highest score possible, the haters give the lowest score possible, how is that fair? Is music really that extreme in their qualities? It's either garbage or it's either perfect? There's no in-between?

Also please explain how 25 and Revival have roughly the same scores (75 for Adele, 74 for Selena). You seriously think Metacritic is a good indication of albums' quality even after this? Does that mean Revival is better than Born This Way?

A lot of times the critics don't judge music but the artists. If they're judging a huge star like Adele or Gaga the work must be perfect. If they're judging smaller artists like Demi Lovato or Selena Gomez, they can deliver mediocre material and get high scores because they don't have high expectations against them.

Vespertine’s MC score is 88, it’s björk’s most acclaimed album on the site.

Lemonade doesn’t deserve 92 when so many better albums have much lower MC scores, metacritic practically loses its purpose

Okay but Lemonade is a masterpiece that deserves every bit of acclaim it gets. And Anti has a 73 so it’s not that great.

I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.

There was wicked backlash from everyone though.

I just don’t overthink it and allow myself to fully enjoy an album if I fully enjoy it. It’s interesting to read how people react or understand songs but past that - I just ignore it.
