Why wasn't John Wayne made an official single?

February 2017.  Gaga had just shook the public and her fanbase with a stellar Super Bowl performance with critical acclaim, ranked as one of the best of all time by many.  The performance skyrocketed Gaga's albums and songs back into the iTunes and Billboard charts, giving Million Reasons a new peak of 4 on the Hot 100 and Joanne reentering at #2, The Fame at #6, Born This Way at #25 and even ARTPOP making the Billboard 200 at #174.  Gaga had momentum and the public's undivided attention for the first time in a while.  February 9th, 2017, four days after her Super Bowl performance, Gaga drops the John Wayne music video, EXCLUSIVELY FIRST ON APPLE MUSIC.  Now, I don't know entirely if the initial exclusive release greatly affected the amount of views it got on YouTube, but I wouldn't rule it out.  Gaga released John Wayne on YouTube about a day or two later and it picked up views relatively fast but then quickly slowed down in the amount of views it was getting.  The public wasn't latching onto the song, it never charted in the Hot 100.  With the world's eye on Gaga, this would be the perfect time to promote the video more and send it to radio as an official single.  Screens in Times Square advertising the video, maybe Gaga doing a short Q&A about the video on Instagram Live or Youtube, releasing a behind the scenes video, a "Making of Joanne" episode of John Wayne (they had the footage, her documentarian followed her around through all of making Joanne), and maybe one or two late night performances.  In my opinion, the song had so much potential to grow on people.  I would argue that even some of her Born This Way singles wouldn't have done as well without the amount Gaga promoted them back then.  What are your thoughts monsters, do you think John Wayne could've seen at least decent success if it was released as a single and received promotion?

PS This thread is not meant to bash Gaga or her team for anything, I'm just fantasizing of the potential this single had.

IDK but it definitely should’ve been one. It’s a bop! It’s kinda short but still think it would be a great single!

I agree with you soo much! I think it had great potential and the music video is by far the best of the Joanne Era. I think she just wanted to set her focus on million reasons because of the Super Bowl Performance, John Wayne would have been only another Up-Tempo song, but milliom reasons was the only ballade and thats why she wanted to push this one, also because she loves that song (obviously, she performed it about 200 times :derpga: ) maybe thats why she didnt see the potential of John Wayne

Gaga doesn't have the same team she did pre-ARTPOP. I have no doubt they could have made it succeed, but messy Gaga promo is no surprise these days :selena:

I use to think John Wayne was gonna be the next single and DIC would be the fourth during Coachella but :selena:

Your right a single after the Superbowl would’ve been ideal!

Honestly Gaga and her team treated John Wayne like it was a single. A music video, rehearsed choreo, visuals, and live performances. Now its just a fan favorite of Joanne. :selena:

It was probably a plan at one point but then MR started doing well and she knew she had a movie to shoot and a tour to rehearse for. There really wasn't much time to promote. So they decided no more singles but JW was already shot long ago so may as well put it out there.

Anyway, the verses and bridge are great but it lacks a strong chorus. (That described Perfect Illusion as well)

Well because Million Reasons stole, her thunder. They can just abandon an old single which suddenly rose to the top of the charts. She was a sacrificial lamb for Million Reasons, same fate with A-YO abd Joanne(Where Do You Thinj You're Goin'?) Piano Version.

I'm glad it wasn't. We can't afford anymore flops :laughga: We got the video we wanted and ended the era with a top 5 hit so I'm good

It shouldn't have been a single, especially post-SB when the video was released since that would've prevented MR from climbing on radio and becoming a hit.

The only true hit from Joanne was MR. A-YO could've been a moderate success at best and maybe Hey Girl could've caught on in parts of Europe. John Wayne could've also been a moderate hit at best, but only if the radio jumped on it which was unlikely at the time.
