"OTTAWA — Conservative MP Maxime Bernier accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday of pushing a "radical multiculturalism" agenda with his continued support for "more diversity."

Bernier waded into an ongoing immigration debate by suggesting advocacy for a society that's "infinitely diverse" will endanger Canada's core identity."

What I think is upsetting that he kinda has a point. Liberals seem to be completely fine with intolerance (when it’s done by a minority)

Not shaking the hand of a woman because she is a woman is sexist and doesn’t deserve tolerance.

Being against gay marriage is homophobic and doesn’t deserve tolerance.

He defined it as values such as freedom, equality and openness

Nationalism and a culture based on fear of losing what one is used to knowing culturally and it changing is one of the most dangerous and absurd ways of thinking. This is the exact kind of thinking that led to the decision of Brexit in my country and the internal silent civil war between progressives and traditionalists who are afraid of cultures changing and adapting due to external influences that aren't, in their view, extrinsically 'Canadian' or 'British' or whatever. It's as though these places haven't been invaded by and influenced by people of different ethnic origins for the whole time of their existence on this planet and these people think the culture they know now was exactly the same 100, 200, 500 years ago etc.

EDIT: Side note, these people who also want to 'preserve culture' like to preach about all immigrants and people of different ethnic origins being intolerant to certain people and ways of life when, in reality, it is white, western people who are the most intolerant in the majority of cases.

How do we become less equal and less open when our society is more diverse? Isn't it the other way around?

Maxime Bernier, your dog-whistle politics is showing :madge:

Sounds like typical garbage talk from the right. They love screaming made-up buzz words like "radical multiculturalism" and "cultural balkanisation" in order to dehumanize people who are simply looking for a better live in a new country.

Diverse doesn’t mean necessarily equal or openness.

Try to walk with a kippah in more some ‘diverse’ districts or try to hold you boyfriends hand.

Openess needs to work in both directions.

Thank you. I hate defending the Liberals but it's just right wing populism trying to appeal to the worried middle class white canadians. Like the goal of getting immigrants to Canada was never really diversity, it was a way for the canadian government to develop the economy and also help people in danger. Diversity was more of a bonus positive effect on society that became later on imprinted in the canadian identity. The right will always try to center their arguments around national identity like this is not new.

Actually it's the right's assimilation based policies that would drive marginalized communities into ghettos. Whereas integrating those communities into the Canadian society, accomodating them and tolerating them is a way of encouraging them to be productive members of society. They won't refuse integration if we are approaching them this way. But saying that they are strangers to the land and need to become basically white in order to "integrate" society will push them to the side into ghettos.
