ode 1,530
Is "Marry The Night" the better song? Yes. Would "Marry The Night" have been a better lead single? No. "Born This Way" was arguably the most hotly anticipated and massively hyped single of the new millenium because Gaga was on such an unprecedented winning streak. She was in her ~imperial period~, and she spent that industry capital on a song that would not have ever been a #1 hit if it was released at any point in Gaga's life besides the peak of Gaga Mania -- a song with a preachy, PRAISE FM, chorus and a bridge that rhymes "gay straight or bi" with "lesbian, transgender life." Born This Way. Its success fed off of and fed into a decades-long movement in political, as well as music culture, toward embracing queerness in an overtly political. The sour taste the song left in the mouths and minds of so many people at the time may well have helped cause Gaga's gradual reversal of fortunes on the pop charts-- and "Marry The Night" may have smashed in a more commercial way that helped Gaga's run of #1s last longer-- but the full impact of "Born This Way" as a lead (and eventual #1) single can't yet be fully appreciated. Its importance and influence on Gaga's career and image is so huge that it is not limited to the era in which it was released; it is on-going and as of yet not fully known. But we can appreciate her paving the way for the songs that have come since and will come in the future, political pop that wouldn't be as possible without her. Deagan 608
Here's my pinch of salt. Judas should've been the lead. She does well with that Bad Romance kind of sonical repitition thing. My god, remember that Ellen performance?
boneknuckleskin 776
MTN was allegedly suppose to be the lead at one time and it should have been it would have smashed (but not with that video). Best song of her career tbh
raragaga 8,119
idk but it still hurts my soul that, while i know it's not necessarily 'mainstream' enough, scheisse wasn't a single.. i need a scheisse music video.. i'll be waiting.. xoxo
Hyperballad 4,310
i dont see why not let’s be honest, anything Gaga released wouldve smashed so i don’t see why not i think it just had to do with Gaga being very overexposed at the time but maybe that’s just me also Born this Way (just like MTN) is a very loud, somewhat aggressive and somewhat industrial sounding song so i’m pretty sure that yea... MTN would’ve smashed EDIT: i didnt bother to read the whole question oops but.. i guess im not sure
TAIPEI 2,511
I think hair should be the fourth single, would be better than yoü and I, but ü&I was so good tho. and BTW is the only choice for the lead single, it's fits and perfect, MTN for the final one was a good way for end of the album/era also. homomo 23,883
Definitely not. Born This Way was the song that needed to be the lead single. It wouldn’t have made sense if it wasn’t. That song is the perfect introduction to the album and the atmosphere she was going for. 0110100001100101011011000110110001101111
Gardevoir 9,823
No. Born This Way itself was the best choice cause it was the essence of album and whole era was about that. Sugar, spice, and everything nice.
