Why is Madonna so slept on nowadays?

Is it because she didn't die young? Her controversial career? Her being a woman? Does it have something to do with her surviving her career for +30 years, therefore being around for too long? Is it because she's too old, or her music quality has dropped *a lot*?

Do you think she will be regarded as high as Michael Jackson or Whitney ahouston the day she passes away? *Hopefully not soon*

She had a truly spectacular run. It's probably better for everyone, including her, to take a break from the 24/7 bombardment that used to be her life.

I'd disagree that her music quality has dropped. it's just getting less attention.

She made childish music just to make fun of her ageist haters and that made her music quality drop a lot. She used to be sooo good lyrically and sonically back in the COADF (Hung Up still bops hard) and Hard Candy era (Miles Away is a timeless masterpiece), now she's just... There. She or her team wants her to be mainstream so bad and that kind of ruined her appeal, I hope she goes to a more mature direction with the new record that has Portugal's culture as inspiration :legend:

She has an older fanbase. She's just in that stage of her career.

She can sell out stadiums because she is Madonna, she has had such a long career and her fanbase has the money to buy tickets.

Pop Radio don't want to play her though because she is old  they are playing music from young artists that their audience love and relate to. Streaming is for a younger generation so Madonna's core fanbase are not checking for her much there.

Most artists her age don't try to create hits and compete with the young artists coming up, Madonna does. She works with young, popular hit producers and artists in the hopes that she will still compete with the upcoming generation and make hits. To a degree I love that! I think it's boundary pushing for a woman in her late 50's to be making pop songs, to be portraying herself as a sexual being and to be refusing to change or cover up and 'act her age'.

On the other hand, she has been doing the whole "trendy producers + trendy artists = pop record that follows trends" thing since Hard Candy which was 10 years ago. She is known as an artist that evolves, adapts, takes risks and changes constantly and I think there has been a bit of stagnation.

She has shown she can do that at her age, I wish she would take more of a risk now and be like "I have nothing left to prove, let me work with a team of producers nobody has ever heard of, develop a new sound and create an album that only someone with 30+ years in the industry and almost 60 years of life experience could create". **** trying to play that game.

Unfortunately it comes down to, yes, ageism, but also her sad try-hard attempts at remaining relevant with young people.  Back in the day Madonna didn't collab with anyone on her singles and just look at her now... crawling between Psy's legs on stage, performing with the likes of LMFAO, go-to rapper Nicki, Miley, Britney/Xtina.  It comes off very "Mommy or Gramma tryna be cool" and that turns people off.

And as Queen of Pop, she's definitely up there with Elvis, Whitney, Michael etc.

I'll be honest that I wasn't super impressed with her bringing LMFAO or Psy on stage - they feel a little beneath her - but I feel like the rest of the artists you mentioned I don't mind at all.

When male legends do this it's cool, and they are seen as endorsing the younger generation. Elton performs with younger artists all the time:

I've seen this criticism of Madonna hundreds of times, I've never seen this criticism over Elton John tbh.

Her attitude and content have not aged gracefully. Cher is 71 and treated like a legend because she has matured and aged gracefully.

Yeah she got 1 mediocre album (MDNA, still full of club bangers) but let's discredit the 11 others who are flawless

Madonna to Confessions were all mature albums. Hard Candy not so much but it had that R&B vibe and she most likely played the bossy/bad b*tch image on purpose. Then MDNA was indeed a weird decision, I admit. Rebel Heart is everything but immature, the only exception would be Bitch I'm Madonna, the rest of the album has songs like Joan Of Arc, Messiah, Rebel Heart, Beautiful Scars, Borrowed Time etc...

SEXODUS

Madonna had that type of career that made statement after statement. She changed how we looked at women and did it in a way that wasn’t the most conventional or subtle. She was often crucified and it does not surprise me that she gets crucified now that she aged, even though it’s not like time it’s any of her fault, but still not surprising at all. A mature woman that still is sexual at her age? What a disgrace. How uncomfortable.

So yeah, ageism is a big issue and it’s completely unfair the way people have turned their backs on this woman.

At the same time, it’s not like she put out good enough music for people to see past their own prejudices. She has to try harder and find back her winning formula that she lost since Hard Candy.
