The majority of the top 10 is filled with digestable bops. I’d like to be proven otherwise but it’s just the truth. Not when it comes to hip hop, artists with deep meanings and songs constantly chart. Besides the trap phrase its one of the reason mainstream pop is dying. It refuses to evolve. I mean look at J. Cole, look at Kendrick Lamar. Its everywhere.

And you think the MAJORITY of hip hop songs at the top of the charts are deep, powerful songs?
SolidSnake 2,804
Just now, Alexander Levi said: Well Gaga and Lana are not hip hop. And you think the MAJORITY of hip hop songs at the top of the charts are deep, powerful songs? Never said that. Never even implied it. All I said is that hip hop artists with meaningful and deep lyrics constantly chart. (Which they do) using "she needs to make music for the mainstream" isnt an excuse you can use in 2018 when songs like "This is America" and "Humble" became #1 on the charts. You can make music for the mainstream and use cleverly crafted lyrics. It doesnt matter the genre.

Inferno 2,880
I think Lana is more melodramatic and somber in her approach. I also think shes every bit as shallow and superficial as Gaga, shes just sponsored by Urban Outfitters rather than Gaga's H&M so to speak. So in that respect, I think Lana is severely overrated. Because shes identified falsely as "alternative" she is taken more seriously and Lana stans as well as other people I assume put her above people like Gaga assuming shes much more introspective and serious. but imo shes not. Shes predictable and cliche, just in a different way than Gaga being a tried and true pop star.

Miichael 1,165
I agree honestly. I adore both of them in so many ways, but lyrically Lana is able to put me in such an amazing state of mind and convey such an incredible deep and idyllic atmosphere with her lyrics, literal masterpieces for sure Some of my favourite lines of hers: "Maybe my contribution could be as small as hoping, that words could turn to birds and birds would send my thoughts your way" "It took thirteen beaches to find one empty, but finally it's mine. With dripping peaches, I'm camera ready almost all the time" "Blue hydrangea, cold cash divine, cashmere, cologne and white sunshine" "I put the radio on, hold you tight in my mind, isn't strange that you're not here with me" "Summertime is nice and hot, and my life is sweet like vanilla is" Born This Way Ball - 20/6/12 | artRAVE: The ARTPOP Ball - 30/8/14 | LA To The Moon Tour - 2/4/2018

JohnWayne92 2,150
Pick out which Lana or Lorde song that is as catchy as a Gaga song and then talk to me. No, but seriously, being poetic doesnt make you the superior song writer, in my eyes. I've found a lot of Lana and Lorde to be cringy at times. Trepadation 5,566
Agree & disagree Lana's music is made to be very (melo)dramatic so it comes across deeper than Gaga's music. Lana is very good a making you feel what she's feeling & heightening your emotions to lyrics that I & many her fans relate to. Not to mention her romanticism of a bad relationship a la ultraviolence, which is bound to have strong deep lyrics. Whereas Gaga purposely writes about shallow things in the name fame. She uses pop culture in her writing (her usage of alfred hitchcock films in bad romance) & fantasy so you can't compare them when they don't write the same stuff. However Gaga is more diverse with her writing, from sexual assault to artificiality. Americano: where she sings about gay marriage & immigration, Hair: using hair as symbolism for freedom & expression, & Angel Down: a song about unjust shooting. ItsTommyBitch 12,640
I think Gaga is a good pop songwriter, not in the sense that she always writes mature, thought provoking, relatable and universal lyrics, but her ear for melody and how she fits them to her lyrics is amazing. Some of Lana's melodies for her lyrics, especially the verses, are very somber, slow, have a very minimal range vocally, etc. They aren't as catchy and the melodic contour of the lines she creates is small and restricted. They are equally as "repetitive" as in pop music, but it may seem more "bland" when its 3-5 notes repeated twice as opposed to 6+notes repeated twice. On the other hand, because Lana sometimes writes melodies to lyrics that were already created, she has some verses/choruses that are quite extended melodically and with much less repetition. Also, there is nothing wrong with having repeating themes, or telling stories with similar messages... just because Video Games and Blue Jeans are both about love doesn't mean they are the same song or anything. The perspective, the story telling, its all different, and there's an infinite amount of nuance and creativity available in pretty much any concept when it comes to lyricism. Even with tropes or literal lines that Lana has repeated, they aren't just straightforward lines, they are lines that have a lot of symbolism and meaning that is adapted when they are re-used; they mean different things in different contexts. On top of that, for fans that follow her and her lyrics, they are nice references as part of her discography, so its kind of a meta appreciation. People honestly don't analyze Lana's lyrics enough. They sound "deep" on the outside, but are really quite poetic when looked at closely. The songwriting on Honeymoon is so freaking fantastic... Swan Song, Salvatore, etc. Even when Gaga's lyrics are beautiful or moving or whatever they are still quite straightforward. The storytelling Lana is capable of is pretty unmatched from her "contemporaries" so to speak. I'd say Lorde is her closest parallel. Gaga is definitely more diverse though. Not that being solely diverse, poetic, musical/melodic, etc. alone are what makes a "good" song writer, or makes two writers comparable. I do think Lana is overall better and more effective of a song writer, but I'm not upset that people may disagree 私自身もこの世の中も誰もかれもが, どんなに華やかな人生でも, どんなに悲惨な人生でも, いつかは変貌し, 破壊され、消滅してしまう. すべてがもともとこの世に存在しない一瞬の幻想なのだから
Robo Ga 15,289
Gaga's lyrical prowess really comes through on certain tracks and not as much on others, but I think that she is fearless when she writes, similar to Lana. They are both super talented and very different. I would love if they collabed more than anything. They would compliment each other so well imo. 🤖⚡️

Patrickern777 600
For me is Tove Lo the best songwriter, because I can relate myself there. Lana is an amazing songwriter for her type of sound, and GaGa have more upbeat tracks that fit for her (also an amazing songwriter)
