elijahfan 25,561
That's pretty ironic that this symbol used by neo-nazis and white supremacists has pre-columbian roots. Like, the joke's pretty much on you mother****ers Then again, the same goes with the swastika, which was found in South and East Asia and in Western Africa long before the nazis used it. I mean, the irony......

With that said I see why they took it down. It could definitely send the wrong message to people who recognise the symbol as nazi related. Ok, wait now THIS changes things. Shook at it being so similar.
gag 22,449
Y'all it's literally the same symbol. It's an accident but everyone who says this is a reach is damn blind. headspin, happiness, DE̤̣A̢̯͔̘T͏͙̗̟̫H̗̙͡ͅ

I feel like that tweet used a stylised design with a nazi symbol in the middle to highlight it's association with nazism, but it made the comparison look awkward When you actually see neo-nazi's walking around with flags, shields, badges and patches of the accurate design and compare it with Shakira's merch... It's ummm unfortunate
homomo 23,848
I’m not going to blame Shakira. I’m glad she took again against this. However, for those of you saying “omg why is everyone so sensitive. We all know the symbols mean happier things in ancient cultures.”, just stop. We all now these symbols used to represent something else; however, over the past century, these symbols have been turned into a message of hate, violence, fascism, and racism. Think of it this way: back in the day, women weren’t allowed to do as much as men did, so in order to help out, men would make women go out and collect bundles of sticks for firewood (historically known as a fag or fggot bundle). As time went on, people would use the word “fggot” as an insult. Basically comparing someone to a women who collects sticks for firewood. Today, you wouldn’t refer to a pile of sticks as a fggot bundle. Just like you wouldn’t refer to Neo-Nazi symbolism as a representation of liberating ancient history. 0110100001100101011011000110110001101111

River 110,903
eh as usual, antisemitism gets a pass here and a sympathy.. if it was a different minority the comments where different.. I still remember the thread of the Rising Sun of Ed Sheeran.. most of the people here wrote things against it on that thread.. Not saying that Shakira is blamed for something because she's not.. it was just a poor coincidence and the necklace is actually pretty beautiful.. Come on and wrap that blade of grass around my hairy ass

Wait yikes But I still don’t think her team was aware of what the symbol was used for in contemporary history. Just like the Rising Sun issue with Ed Sheeran, I think it’s just a really unfortunate choice of imagery
