Do superhero movies get nominations at the Oscars though?

Superhero movies don't usually go the original soundtrack route. Those movies don't usually attach themselves to songs and promote those songs. Black Panther is different in that respect. Think even the soundtrack to Spiderman Homecoming or Thor: Ragnarok that came just before it... It's just the score to the movie... None of these movies have really been eligible before.

Black Panther is really the first Superhero movie to have the "soundtrack album" composed of original songs and a seperate "film score album".

Best Original Song is a pretty open category though honestly. Animated, comedy, drama, action, documentary, musical, anythings welcome. For children, for adults.

I mean past nominations have included:

Ted (as in the comedy with the bear by Seth MacFarlane), Frozen, 50 Shades of Grey, An Inconvenient Truth, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, The Muppets, James Bond: Spectre.

This is a category that really is based on the "best original song" attached to a film, so even if the film isn't really a contender, if the movie has been a commercial success and the song has got some attention - it's highly likely to be nominated.

So while superhero movies don't generally come up in "Best Original Song", it's only because none have been eligible before. This time Black Panther are eligible and they are definitely getting a nod.

The lack of nominations for superhero movies in the past doesn't convince me that Black Panther will definitely be getting a nomination. I mean sure it has some possibility of getting nominated, but saying that it will definitely be nominated is still far-fetched for me. We'll see what happens.

I think movies like A Star Is Born stand a bigger chance given the history of musicals getting nominated frequently for Best Original Song like City of Stars from La La Land, and that song from The Greatest Showman.

But the only reason there has been a lack of nominations is because no Superhero movie has been eligible before   Musicals are nominated frequently because, by their very nature, they are consistently eligible.

Winning is one thing - but in terms of nominations Black Panther is a shoe in. The category is notoriously open to ANY kind of film... There aren't many categories where you can see 50 Shades of Grey next to a child friendly Disney film such as Frozen, next to an adult comedy film with crude humour like Ted, next to a drama about civil rights like Selma, next to an action movie with CGI explosions like Bond next to a documentary like The Hunting Ground.

Even with "Til It Happens To You" everyone knew it was a favourite to be nominated, and even had a great shot of winning, despite the fact that Documentaries are hardly ever nominated. But Documentary's don't usually attach themselves to original songs - this was a documentary that did, it did well, the song was written by Diane Warren and sung by Gaga, it did well for a song attached to a movie, it captured a cultural zeitgeist, it thematically went with the movie.... It was a shoe in.

At this point with the success of Black Panther and the success of All The Stars - the song is already an oscars favourite. Sites like GoldDerby that are all about award show predictions currently have it as the running favourite, the talk is currently that in this category All The Stars is the favourite. Superhero movies don't get nominated - only because they don't attach themselves to original songs... Black Panther did and we got a song that has done very well... It's clearly the front-runner at this point, it's crazy to think it isn't.

It just doesn't make sense to compare it's chances based on the lack of nominations by other superhero movies - no other super hero movie has been eligible for the category before. "Best Original Song" is a very different breed to "Best Picture" - You know the type of movies they pick for "Best Picture"... It's formulaic and you can see that in past nominations. With "Best Original Song" there isn't a limitation, in regards to nominations, based on the genre of movie or genre of song. We can see that clearly in the history of nominations.
