Gaga’s hymn was arguably a misstep

I came accross this article from The Guardian. The writer is a trans woman. And she believes that Gaga’s modern queer hymn (Born This Way) was arguably a “misstep.”

Titled:

I’m trans, and I don’t care if we were ‘born this way’. Neither should you.

“What does being a trans person in a transphobic society produce? At the moment, too often, it’s still violence, prejudice and discrimination. Lady Gaga told trans people we “were born to survive”. On the contrary, it seems that for better or worse our survival is dependent on the support and solidarity of others.”

I’m actually nice.

The point of the song was to embrace your differences. Imagine if the song had not been written. How many young kids would have not been saved, myself included?

Aren't transgender people "born to survive" in a cisnormative society?

Judas is coming, let the cultural baptism begin.

Wow, people still getting upset about Born This Way in 2018. The 7 year old song that people can't stop talking about? I live for the longevity of this songs relevance!

Born this Way is supposed to be an empowering anthem for the disenfranchised. The lyrics do not literally mean we were born with our biological parts and that is that, but rather that who you are is your truth and that is something that cannot be taken away. Moreover, that those differences are not a mistake and that no matter what path you take to feeling comfortable with yourself, you were brought into this world to survive and survive you should.

If you take the song literally, maybe it can be hard to see, but this just seems like a case of overthinking way too much.

And I doubt transphobic people are going to take a Lady Gaga song and use it against the community. JFC.

But being 'born this way' and having solidarity with others are not mutually exclusive :duck:

Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

It seems that people are so damn sensitive now. They can create a problem out of nothing. Born This Way has helped so many people. Why say something that criticizes such a powerful song and message?

Isn't the song about being re-born over and over again in your life? :oprah:

Born This Way, a controversial anthem that still generates discussion. :tony:

In 2011, it was conservatives getting offended by Born This Way. Now LGBTQ+ people are getting offended by it. This just proves that people will get offended at everything.

Also BTW did more for the gay/trans community than this writer, she needs to get a grip.

I honestly don’t know what is the main point of the author’s article, like honestly I feel like commentators over-analyze the lyrics and meaning of Born This Way, twisting the message and changing into something that is against for what it stood for
